Paradox

I enjoyed reading Paradox even though much of material was above my head. Yet, I learned about subjective probability, the degree to which one believes something and I will use it my classes that I teach to high school students. Also, paradoxes-read about the book to learn about some famous paradoxes- make you pause and think, which provide humans the opportunity to consider other ideas and grow.

Difficult to use as a reference

This book seems to be a good value at $12 for 225 pages. Be advised, however, that it is smaller than standard size at 5 x 7 inches.

The book appears to have a lot of good information. Unfortunately, it has effectively no table of contents --- only 3 chapters listed for the 225 pages. This makes it very difficult to use as a reference --- especially given the unusual structure of the book. I find this flaw to be nearly fatal.

Nevertheless, in view of the low cost for a substantial amount of content, you may find the book worth buying. I recommend checking out a library copy first, as I have done.

Founded in the late 18th century by expatriate German Jews, the London-based House of Rothschild was within decades the largest banking enterprise in the world. Its principals controlled a vast portion of the industrial world's wealth--more so, Oxford historian Niall Ferguson writes, than any family has since--and as a result enjoyed tremendous political influence in the major capitals of Europe, counting as allies such important figures as Metternich and Wellington. That influence would provoke countless anti-Semitic tracts fulminating against Jewish usury and against the power of "Eastern potentates" in the empires of England and France. Although the Rothschilds were well aware of their power and not reluctant to use it, they operated fairly, Ferguson notes. For example, whereas lending rates in the textile industry, in which the Rothschilds got their start, were often 20 percent, the fledgling house charged 5 to 9 percent. Through shrewd, complex negotiations they helped promote peace and the beginnings of economic union throughout Europe.

Ferguson's sprawling history covers much ground and involves a cast of hundreds of players. Equipped with unprecedented access to pre-1915 Rothschild archives, Oxford historian Ferguson begins the family history with Frankfurt merchant Mayer Amschel, but the real story starts with the arrival of the most capable of his sons, Nathan Mayer, in England 200 years ago. Each of Mayer's five sons was located in different cities?Paris, London, Vienna, Naples and Frankfurt. Combined with a mandated unity that kept the brothers remarkably close while excluding daughters, in-laws and strangers, this geographic dispersal gave the family's financial firm an unbeatable edge, despite Mayer's sons being of unequal competence. N.M. Rothschild is the one Ferguson chooses as his protagonist (his great-great-grandson suggested the project to the author). A British historian and political commentator, Ferguson is author of Paper and Iron: Hamburg Business and German Politics in the Era of Inflation 1897^-1927 (1995). He also edited and contributed to Virtual History: Alternatives and Counterfactuals (1997), a book that argues that the exploration of alternative outcomes to historical events is a legitimate form of scholarly inquiry. Here he returns to "historical reality" to trace the rise of the Rothschild financial empire. More than a dozen books have profiled the Rothschilds; but with the family's five branches and its vast wealth, power, and influence, there is much to chronicle. Each successive biographer has been granted access to more newly available family records, but Ferguson claims unprecedented and unrestricted access to all the surviving historical family and corporate documents. Included in the trove are more than 20,000 letters in four languages and 20 separate archives. Ferguson also enjoyed the cooperation of various of the Rothschilds who had opportunity to comment on his early manuscripts. So prodigious is Ferguson's definitive effort, it will require a second volume, expected next fall. David Rouse

An intriguing study of a famous and powerful family.

A fascinating quite detailed look into the lives of an important family as well as a chronical of the times from the end of the 18 century on. The Rothschilds made a unique and critical impact on the economic, social, and political development of the 19th century. The book is well researched and written and easy to read if one doesn't get bogged down in the numbers. I haven't finished this book yet and haven't started Volume 2 so this is preliminary review but I don't expect it to change.

FASCINATING ECONOMICS AND HISTORY

I have degrees in economics and mathematics and first started reading the House of Rothschild Vol.1 as a borrowed book from the library. After re-reading the House of Rothschild for the third time I decided it was time to buy my own hardcover edition, which I did. This is an uncanny and remarkably descriptive book on the incredible depth of economic understanding that the Rothschild Family exhibits and applies to the real world. The author Niall Ferguson has a refined style of writing so even long descriptions of various political and economic situations are interesting and entertaining. I also enjoyed the highlights of Rothschild wit, as for example beckoning a high ranking nobleman to, when Nathaniel was too busy to look up from his desk and had offered him a chair, to take TWO chairs when the nobleman felt slighted, I love this story. I am now reading Vol 2 and it so far has the same high caliber style of writing and depth, thanks Niall for writing these great books.

This books greatest strength is also its most formidable challenge; it doesn't miss a thing.

I am a huge fan of Niall Ferguson, both as an author and a historian, but in this book his attention to detail is, at times, too much. On some occasions during reading this book I lost site of the whole Rothschild story as an entity because I was drowning in detail I found unnecessary.

That being said, for those of you who want a TRUE historical record of the rise of this financial dynasty from the beginning, free from the myths which have become part of popular financial history, then this book is a must read.

I’ve always been fascinated by Shakespeare’s plays. But, like many, I find them confusing and hard to understand. I’ve taken classes on Shakespeare, purchased “Shakespeare for Dummies,” Googled translations and even watched the movies. But I still have a hard time grasping the language. Macbeth was also one of my least favorite plays when we read it in High School and, to be honest, I had forgotten pretty much everything about it – the plot, the characters, everything! So when I first started reading, I found myself really confused, trying to remember who was who! Let’s just say I was really thankful for the character index!!

Confusion aside, Macbeth #killingit was hilarious and entertaining. Once again, the OMG Shakespeare books took a play that should have been serious and boring (sorry, Shakespeare fans! This one was boring for me when I read it in school!) and made it hilarious and entertaining. By breaking down the complex language into modern phone/internet speak (via text messages, group chats, status updates, emojis, etc), I was actually able to grasp what the play was about and follow along!

Though I definitely struggled with the characters, the content itself was easy to grasp and follow and I really ended up enjoying it – YES, I ended up enjoying one of my LEAST FAVORITE Shakespeare plays thanks to this epic OMG Shakespeare interpretation!

Whether you want to learn Shakespeare or teach Shakespeare, I highly recommend this book. You’ll never view Macbeth in the same way, ever again! And you’ll (actually) enjoy reading it!

Macbeth #killingit is not my favorite of the OMG Shakespeare series--that honor remains with srsly Hamlet--but it's still a ridiculously funny and smart take on that play that you probably had to read in high school and don't remember much about. Hint: it's the one with the witches and you got to say "damned spot" out loud in English class without getting in trouble.

If you haven't seen anything in this series before, it's basically a social media take on Shakespeare's plays. It's very emoji-heavy. This one's a bit different from YOLO Juliet and srsly Hamlet in that Carbone incorporates even more social media platforms here, and it's hilarious. We have the witches pinning things to their Kingterest board (ingredients for spells, obvi), and Lady Macbeth's maid checking her mistress' symptoms on KingMD Symptom Checker.

And Great Birnam Wood checking in to Dunsinane was hilarious.

Again, this is definitely a book for people who've already read the original play. There's no substitute for Shakespeare, but this is a hilarious and witty supplement.

People by the "who" more than they buy the "what." Make sure they know who you are.

I bought this book about a month ago and got through it pretty quickly. It's very well written, with clear explanations and examples. In some ways it targets the UK public, but for the most part it applies to everybody who is a little hesitant about blowing his or her own horn.

I recommend this book very highly to anybody with any ambition. As Jennifer Holloway points out, you'll need to develop your personal brand both for outside your current company and for what you do inside. People by the "who" more than they buy the "what." Make sure you know who you are and are communicating it clearly in all the ways you interact with people (in person, on the phone, in email, on linkedin, and so forth). Make sure people know what they are going to get when they work with you.

I'll finish with another excellent point made by Holloway, be authentic. Not everybody is going to like your brand, you can count on that. So communicate who you are clearly and face the fact that not everybody will like it.

Using humor and her deeply authentic style to make key points stick, Jennifer lays out the basics of personal branding in a practical guide that you'll turn to again and again. Whether it's in person, in the office, or online, Jennifer delivers the how-to of creating, promoting and maintaining your personal brand. I personally love the real-life, easy to read examples on every other page titled, "here's what I'm talking about." Go ahead and purchase several books and pass them out to your colleagues. They will thank you!

This is a great book! It's packed with so much good, solid information. Jonathan didn't just throw together information found in fitness magazines ; he obviously researched and thought through his concepts. I think so many people, myself included, work on our diets and exercise but fail to remember that the mind truly can be motivating or discouraging. How can a person really be all he /she wants to be if they are constantly belittling themselves? If you take the time to put these three areas of your life in order... A great guide to reaching the next level in your Jira implementation

Mastering Jira is an excellent guide to reaching the “next level” in understanding Jira to meet the needs of your organization. The book provides a comprehensive overview of virtually all the areas you need to cover to build your Jira instance maintain it. Some of the areas of interest I found immediately was the importation of CSV files into Jira using Javascript to show and hide fields based, and the use of built-in Notifications to make useful communication at any stage of a workflow in the issue lifecycle.

Achieving a balance in any given book is difficult. If there is too little coverage on a topic, the book does not have enough material to “master” the topic, if there is too much coverage on one single topic, the title is out of reach for someone getting starting and attempting to learn the application. I found that Mastering Jira I found was adept in achieving a balanced approach.

The only area that was covered in perhaps too much depth early was the Jira SDK discussion. Granted a further discussion of this is found at the end of the book, but a user covering the many topics Jira touches (Agile, JQL, Workflows, etc.) will probably have enough to learn and likely will not want to begin building their own plugins right away. On the other hand, a discussion about the Jira installation would not be complete without addressing the issue of development.

Why this book? You can find a lot of information on the web with regard to Jira. The real beauty of this text is all of the essentials are here in one location. As far as some unique aspects to the book, I found the use of graphs and screen shots to illustrate various topics was outstanding. The author also covers (though almost never discussed on the web) how to document your Jira instance and even conduct a business needs (Requirements) analysis that will make your Jira project match up what the user(s) requested. Lastly, the author provides wide variety of ways to create reports and suggests several use cases to assist the user in modelling and integrating Jira into a business environment.

You’ll find once you have completed the book you will be returning to it often as a resource as your implementation grows.

An excellent introduction to thinking JIRA

JIRA is an excellent tool, but to use it effectively one needs to see it through the eyes of experienced administrators who manage JIRA in complex corporate environments. Mastering JIRA introduces a reader to a strategy of using JIRA and to best practices. There are many ways to use JIRA, interact with it and improve it, but the most difficult part of any way is to know that there’s a way and to make the first step, and this book allows reader to make a lot of first steps in a ways that uncover real power of JIRA. Apart from covering most essential plugins as Agile and Script Runner it also shows some tricks employed by administrators and designers. Mastering JIRA will make you thinking JIRA and understand JIRA culture.

My husband and his family speak Lao and I want to learn more so I can understand somethings with out it needing to have it translated, I love that you can look words up in either lao or english and see how it is translated.

The Best Phrasebook for Lao

I think this is the best phrasebook I've seen for the Lao language. I've used it on several trips to Laos and shared it with some Lao friends in America. They were very impressed that the sentences were written as they really say them, not like you see in a textbook. The book is from a New York publisher of language books that publishes books with high standards.
Other good things I found about the book:
1. It has a clear, concise grammar section
2. the selection of words and topics is comprehensive
3. the book is arranged in a way that is very easy to use
4. the introductory description of Lao is interesting and informative
I'd also like to say that the pronunciation system is the easiest I've seen. Tones are marked by lines that show the direction, which makes pronunciation a lot more clear than other books (this is also a problem with Thai). While there is no Lao script in the book the pronunciation can be figured out from the pronunciation chart in the front of the book. I think this book would be useful for people studying Lao, not only for travellers. Thank you Mr. Higbie for a creating a wonderful contribution to my library of S.E.Asian language books.
