Needs better background research

The section on female physiology and contraception is not well-researched. She briefly discusses natural methods of family planning, yet her description is incorrect. She talks about charting basal body temperature and mucus for the rhythm method, and this is not how the rhythm method works. What she is trying to describe is the sympto-thermal method, which has 99.6% method effectiveness because it the basal body temperature and mucus in order to observe real-time changes in hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. In The First Civil Right, Naomi Murakawa inverts the conventional wisdom by arguing that the expansion of the federal carceral state-a system that disproportionately imprisons blacks and Latinos-was, in fact, rooted in the civil-rights liberalism of the 1940s and early 1960s, not in the period after.

Murakawa traces the development of the modern American prison system through several presidencies, both Republican and Democrat. Responding to calls to end the lawlessness and violence against blacks at the state and local levels, the Truman administration expanded the scope of what was previously a weak federal system. Later administrations from Johnson to Clinton expanded the federal presence even more. Ironically, these steps laid the groundwork for the creation of the vast penal archipelago that now exists in the United States. What began as a liberal initiative to curb the mob violence and police brutality that had deprived racial minorities of their 'first civil right-physical safety-eventually evolved into the federal correctional system that now deprives them, in unjustly large numbers, of another important right: freedom. A Must Read Given Current Events

A clear, compelling and deeply researched work, Murakawa complicates the widely-believed understanding that the expansion of the carceral state was the result of conservative appeals to law and order when in fact it was a bipartisan endeavor whose foundations were laid by liberals. She shows, quite convincingly, how American fears of black people were leveraged by politicians to expand a prison industrial complex that exists, increasingly, simply for its own sake. I look forward to reading the scholarship it hopefully inspires.

Anyone interested in mass incarceration needs to read this book. Before this book was published, I heard Prof. Murakawa give a talk based on it and that talk is still one of the most electrifying talks I have ever heard. Her argument in the book is one that we seem to have to keep on learning: that well-intentioned liberals are a part of the problem. This book is a warning that our current focus on improving criminal justice administration through liberal reform is misguided and only bound to make criminal justice seemingly legitimate but still racially deadly.The chapter on Truman, chapter 2, remakes our understanding of law and order politics and places responsibility squarely on the shoulders of liberals and the national democratic party by revealing the failure of liberal form.

50 Lush Color Photos Are Worth More Than 50,000 Words

Although this book has many elements, its core is the Harley-Davidson as a design. The photographs are mostly of 50 different models, focused on the motorcycle alone, done with remarkable lighting to create exquisite detail and color. You will feel like you are visiting a museum of mint Harleys as you "stroll" from page to page while sitting comfortably in your favorite chair. The book is strengthened by some classic Harley photos that you have seen before, such as from Easy Rider. There is also a good overview of the development of the company, key technologies, and a timeline of when different bikes were introduced. For those who don't know about Harleys, you also have a glossary to help you interpret, and a list of contacts to help you get even more information.

I am not an expert on motorcycles but have spent many happy hours on them. I could feel the thundering power in my legs as I looked at the Harley in Terminator II, the 74FLHB Electra Glide in blue from 1965, the FLHS Electra Glide from 1988, the FLSTF Fat Boy from 1999, and especially the Buell X1 Lightning from 1999.
To me the best page was 184 where there is a cutaway of the famous V-twin engine, along with a good description of each element. This is the heart of what makes a Harley a Harley, and I was glad to learn more about this wonderful design.
After you have finished enjoying this book and taken a ride on your Harley to celebrate (don't have one yet? . . . well, start dreaming and saving . . .), I suggest that you think about other ways you can enjoy your spirit of adventure and desire for the open road. Riding a Harley doesn't get you all the exercise you could use. Are there any hiking trails that you could ride your Harley to? In that way, you could have a double adventure. Plus, you can have even more enjoyment with your family and friends while you hike. If you haven't hiked the Grand Canyon yet down to the Colorado River, that would make a great ride/hike combination. Just do it! -- (but do plan ahead, you'll enjoy it more if you do).

A quality look at the history of Harley

Once you hear that iconic rumbling, you know there is a Harley-Davidson around. Harley-Davidsons are everywhere, and there is a solid following of motorcycle enthusiasts all across the world. The Ultimate Harley-Davidson book breaks down each model decade by decade. It is a wonderful format for Harley-Davidson lovers who enjoy reading the history that goes along with these wonderful machines. The entire book is bright and bold with complete and accurate information and outstanding photographs from past to present.

From the early days of the company to the days of Easy Ride, the reader gets a deep look into Harley-Davidson culture, specs, and mechanics. "The arrival of high-spec Japanese imports had another consequence. People wondered why, if Japanese 125cc machine could have an electric starter, and American 1200cc machine could not. Harley's response was to fit an electric starter to its FL models from 1965 to create the Electra Glide, possibly the most famous motorcycle model ever built. It even had a film named after it, Electra Glide in Blue (1973)."

Hugo Wilson, author and motorcycle enthusiast, has written many best-selling books on motorcycles and is the editor of the United Kingdom's top selling motorcycle magazine "Bikes". I think of him as a British Allan Girdler. Girdler is an American author and motorcycle enthusiast who has educated me well on the history of the Harley-Davidson Xr-750 and Harley Davidson Sportster.

Ultimate Harley-Davidson is a great collectors item or gift! This book is well planned, and the decade by decade breakdown will help Harley lovers explore each era. The index is also bright and vivid for easy searching.

Tocotrienols - Bodyguards of Health

As a former U.C. Berkeley student of Professor Herbert Evans, the co-discoverer of Vitamin E, I truly enjoyed reading both editions as it provides enlightening new detailed information about the recently discovered properties of the tocotrienols. Since Dr. Evan's discovery of alpha tocopherol over 90 yrs. ago (1922), most of the vitamin E research has been focused on this isomer, which we now know is only one of the more than eight that make up the vitamin E family. Tocotrienols were discovered much later (1965) and remained obscure until the 1980's when it was discovered that the tocotrienols lower blood cholesterol, but not the tocopherols. In 1995, research cardiologists in a four year study of patients with severe carotid stenosis reported that "94% of the patients receiving tocotrienols improved or stabilized, whereas none of the controls improved, and over half got worse". Current research now consistently reveals that alpha tocopherol actually interferes with the function of the tocotrienols and should be kept separate for maximum tocotrienol benefits. Today, research results are revealing incredible results for tocotrienols in cancer inhibition and cardiovascular disease, as well as amazing developments in other beneficial areas of anti-angiogenesis, anti-inflammation, obesity and diabetes, radiation protection, skin and bone health, anti-aging, and recently cognitive impairment. I most anxiously await the latest research discoveries of this amazing bodyguard of health! I'm sure Dr. Evans would be ecstatic to learn about the Tocotrienols, as he only knew about Tocopherols.

This book is a must read for victims of mental and/or physical abuse! Both of my parents are alcoholics and have done and said alot of messed up things to me and always end up remembering things way differently than how they really happened. Im always the aggressor in their version of the story, and they would call me a liar or use humiliating, belittling terms like "la la land" if I say otherwise. With no friends, and no family within 1,800 miles, I have always felt utterly alone with no one to help and no one who cares. I have 0% self esteem, but this book gives me hope and motivation to change myself and rearrange my mind. This book has shown me that someone who has been through things as horribly unreal as Channon has, it's possible to recover and become the beautiful, positive young lady she is today. She is such an inspiration!

Grade 10 Up–In concise, meticulous prose, Lammers intends to teach absolute beginners how to use manga to learn to speak and read conversational Japanese. This seems like a daunting task, and it is, but for someone who has the patience, drive, and desire to learn the language, the book will be an immense help. The author's primary method for teaching it is to present a panel or scene from a manga (a list of the manga used is included in an appendix), then offer a four-tier translation of what the character is saying. Beneath the written Japanese is the romaji ("Roman letters") text, then comes a word-for-word translation so nonnative speakers can understand the structure of the Japanese, and finally a polished translation that expresses what the sentence means in natural English. Between these panels and translations (which take up the bulk of each page) are detailed explanations of the grammar, pronunciation, and sentence structure of each example. Although Lammers suggests that this book will be useful for beginners, he presents information in such a fast-paced way that readers will best be served by using the book as a supplement to a language class. No exercises are included, but the author does recommend specific titles for the purpose of self-testing. So you wanna translate manga...

You've taken a class or two at school, you've learned kana and you've got a kanji dictionary so you're all set, right?

Not so fast. If you've ever picked up a real Japanese comic (manga) you've probably realized that spoken Japanese is very different (and downright incomprehensible) from what you're learning in the textbook.

Well, this book is what you need. Forget "Japanes in Mangaland" and all the other cutesy manga related Japanese titles. They're just basic Japanese texts gussied up with a few pretty pictures. This book uses real manga strips to illustrate key grammar points. The author also goes into detail with each panel so you get vocabulary and cultural references. And while the manga strips aren't the most current Shonen Jump, they are interesting.

Bottom line: if you want to read manga, get this book. If you're doing Ok in Japanese but are still fuzzy on some of the casual, spoken constructions, get this book. I wish it had been around a few years ago when I first started learning Japanese and trying to decipher my manga.

Splendid textbook if you want to read japanese

This is quite possibly the best language textbook I've encountered so far. Language textbooks use to have this little problem: they are quite boring. Mr. Smith at the airport; Mr. Smith at a restaurant; Mr. Smith shopping. Not this one: Japanese the Manga Way is fun to read. Who would've thought that language textbooks could be fun?

Its format is quite unique: there aren't long grammatical explanations, and almost all the examples are taken from manga. A lesson begins with some explanation, then a panel from some manga, followed by its translation and notes explaining new or unusual grammatical constructs found in it. Other books use manga panels as examples, so what's new here? Two things: first, the author explains the context in the story for every panel, so that the reader can follow the chain of events and understand what the characters are saying; and second, the book is organized so that examples only rarely use language constructs that weren't explained yet. Furthermore, there are a lot more examples than in similar books, as the whole exposition is guided by them.

This is all very good and dandy, especially if you want to learn to read manga, but it's important to be aware that the book is "an illustrated guide to grammar and structure" as it says on the title, so it's not a complete japanese course. It doesn't present any method to help learning the japanese writing system (kana or kanji), only kana charts at the beginning. Also, it obviously won't help with the spoken language. But within its own objectives, it's a very good book.

A basic japanese course for self-study could be organized like this: first, learn kana & kanji; my recommendations are Heisig's books Remembering the Kana: The Hiragana / The Katakana and Remembering the Kanji: A Complete Course on How Not to Forget the Meaning and Writing of Japanese Characters. Then read this book to get a general feeling for the language; you won't of course be able to memorize all the details given in the notes, but you should get an idea how the language works. You should get a good dictionary too. Then the real learning begins with practice: read lots of manga, watch anime and movies (or TV), listen to japanese music, immerse yourself in the language and culture. And keep Lammers' book nearby; as you read manga you'll encounter many constructs covered in the book, so you can get back there and re-read the notes. With practice, it all gets internalized in your language skills.

And forget about other japanese books that teach through manga: I have the Japanese in Mangaland series, and while it's not that bad, it's not nearly as good as this one. I wish there were more language textbooks like this one, for other languages besides japanese.

Good Resource

This is an excellent supplementary book to your Nihongo arsenal. It covers a suprisingly large amount of grammar, all in a well thought out description. This book covers mostly colloquial speech, which is nice for those of us who dont have access to hearing Japanese conversations very often (if at all). In-formal forms of speech are explained (along with their polite equivilant) which I loved, because unfortunatley in classes and textbooks, they concentrate almost soley on polite speech and no informal contexts. So you wont be suprised to find out the Japanese person you are talking to isn't talking like a textbook.

This book uses kanji/furigana/katakana along with romanji and then translated into english, so if you havent memorized your 3 alpahbets yet (especially the motherlode, kanji), dont fret.

I wouldnt recommend this book to fresh beginners, I think to have some understanding of it you need to have at least some basic Japanese (few months or so).

I gave it 4 out of 5 because I think this book is lacking without some kind of workbook to go along with it. With a workbook, this book could probably replace alot of textbooks.

Awesome Book - Funny and Creative, Great for All Ages!

There is a reason why this is the number one best seller in Amazon children's Minecraft books, and I'm here to tell you why! Obviously the premise of the story is based on the Wimpy Kid series, so you're basically getting a point-of-view story in diary form. The chapters are broken down into days and are short and easy to read. They're told from Zombie's point of view, who is middle school aged and introduces us to all of his friends (who are also Mobs like him). You'll meet Skelly, Creepy, and Zombie's whole family (even his little ankle biting brother). There are little black and white pictures scattered throughout, so it breaks up the story and makes it more entertaining for the reader. Zombie is a very likable character, not scary or frightening at all. There is nothing gory (but some gross mentions of boogers and such). Zombie tells about his daily life as a Mob and about his human friend, Steve. You might find some typos throughout the book, but nothing awful (that's the only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5). My son is 6 and could probably read these on his own (he's a strong reader) but he preferred having it read aloud to him. And I must say, I enjoyed reading it, too! There were some cute and funny parts that made me chuckle out loud (you will especially appreciate it if you are an adult Minecraft fan). I particularly appreciated that the author kept the storyline light and funny, and that almost all ages could appreciate it. Some of the other Minecraft fiction out there is not geared toward the younger crowd, but this one, in my opinion, is safe for everyone. I also have to add that we were given a free copy of the book from the author in exchange for a fair review, but I went ahead and purchased another copy for myself as well as book 4 in the series for my son - we loved it that much! Definitely worth reading, and it's a great price, you can't beat it.

Yes.

What did you like most about it?
It was fun to read.

Was it difficult to read?
No. It was pretty easy.

Would you recommend it to your friends?
Probably.

Because I know they like that kind of thing.

Not Good...

Just because a book uses terms and characters from Minecraft doesn't necessarily make it any GOOD. I know this book is geared towards young readers, but as a teacher who uses Minecraft EDU in schools, I was not impressed. The writing is terrible, the plot is weak, and the book contains NO paragraphs. Instead it's just a string of poorly constructed sentences. Kids are smarter than this type of writing, give them more credit to actually READ a story with paragraphs, character development, and plot lines.
