Really not useful

This book is a confusing waste of money. For starters, my own mistake was thinking that it was 3.0 3.5, it is 2.0. Second, this book is "DIABLO II" but it is actually just characters from DIABLO II and the STORY line of DIABLO I, which is crappy considering they stole the monsters from DIABLO II also. This book is also ridden with typos and innacuracies. Please save yourself time and money and buy a different book.

A great resource and lots of retro fun

There's two ways to use this product, both of which I heartily recommend, although "The Awakening" doesn't succeed equally at both.
As a sourcebook, it's terrific: There's five new AD&D kits (Amazon, Barbarian, Paladin, Necromancer and Sorcerer) that can be used to flesh out the standard AD&D characters of the same names (lifting new skills and spells for necromancer specialist mages, for instance) or to replace standard character types with these more colorful archetypes.
There are dozens of new spells, many of them quite good (the "corpse exploder" is a hoot), 100 or so new monsters (in true Diablo-style, though, they're actually variants on 20 or so base new monster types) and, of course, over a million new magic items, using the Diablo system of variable enchantment types piled atop one another (a system so interesting, it's how magic items are going to work in the upcoming 3rd edition of Dungeons and Dragons).
This is how I'm using the book. I'll be dropping Scavengers and Acid Spitters and Fallen Ones into my dungeons. Maybe my players will recognize them, maybe they won't. An upcoming necromancer archvillain will also have spells the players have never encountered before, drawing on this book, the wonderful-but-impossible-to-find Complete Necromancer's Handbook and the skills in this book. Great stuff all around.
The other way to use the book, though, isn't as successful: The dungeon crawl is fun - and HUGE - but the editing mistakes that were mildly annoying in earlier parts of the book (at least one monster's hit dice is clearly a major typo) become a real problem here, with items listed on the maps that don't show up in the description and vice versa. (The two chest sizes allegedly indicated on the map are actually both shown with an identical image, for instance.) And while Tristram is described - with spoilers, for those who haven't played the original computer game - there's no map, which seems an odd omission.
Having said that, though, this measures up quite well against the classic "Temple of Elemental Evil" module from AD&D's heyday, and I'll likely be using this as a straight forward dungeon crawl on those occasions when my full gaming group can't all get together. But even if you just use the source material that make up the first ¾ of the book, "Diablo II: The Awakening" is a great value and a terrific campaign resource for any DM.

Excellent book and great source material but...

This book contains a multitude of usefull features. It has five kits based off the Diablo 2 classes, Barbarian, Paladin, Necromancer, Sorcereress and amazon. You might be thinking that some of those already are classes/ kits, well these are diffrent, speciffically designed for Diablo. There is a great deal of good art work, and there are over 100's monsters from the diablo world. (caveat: there are 100's monsters, but in actuallity the monsters are grouped together according to type, for example three or four types of skeletons share a page with info on all, like in the Monstrous Manual). You also get stats for old timers like Griswald and Farnham and the other townspeople from the first diablo.
The scorce material is top notch. It fully conforms and follows the story from the origonal Diablo. It has nothing to do with Diablo 2, other than the 5 kits I described above. But I perfer it this way as I don't want the story spoiled.
Overall, this is a great book. However if your AD&D players have played the first diablo, you should not use anything directly out of the book (But what good DM does:) There are a nifty magic item generation charts to get diablo style magic items. All in all I would suggest getting this book. But, do not accidently pick up the other Diablo 2 set. That is for Basic D&D and is intended to be an intoduction to the game. Likewise if you are new to Dungeons and Dragons you should pick up the D&D Diablo 2 intro set. It comes with dice and all the other stuff you need to play.

About the Author

Luis R. Gómez-Mejía holds the Ray and Milann Siegfried Professor of Management Chair in Business at the University of Notre Dame. Prior to that, he was the Benton Cocanougher Chair at Texas A&M University as well as Council of 100 Distinguished Scholars at Arizona State University (ASU), and held the Horace Steel Arizona Heritage Chair at ASU. He was a Regent’s Professor at ASU and has recently received the Outstanding Alumni Award from the University of Minnesota and was awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa at Carlos III University (Spain). He is a Fellow of the Academy of Management and member of the “Hall of Fame” of the Acad- emy of Management (which includes 33 members out of approximately 20,000 members in the Academy of Management). He has published more than 250 articles and 12 books focused on macro human resource issues. His work has appeared in the best management journals including: Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Strategic Management Journal, and Administrative Science Quarterly. He has received numerous awards for his research, including “best paper” in the Academy of Management Journal and “most impactful paper” in Administrative Science Quarterly. His publications have been cited approximately 16,000 times (Google), making him one of the most highly cited management scholars. He is past president of the Human Resource Division of the Academy of Management and has served as elected member of the Board of Governors of the Academy of Management. He also served three terms as president of the Iberoamerican Academy of Management.

 

David B. Balkin is Professor of Management at the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He received his PhD in human resource management and industrial relations from the University of Minnesota. Prior to joining the University of Colorado, he served on the faculties of Louisiana State University and Northeastern University. He has published over 70 articles appearing in journals such as the Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Personnel Psychology, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Journal of Business Venturing, and Journal of Management Studies. One of his publications (coauthored with Luis R. Gómez-Mejía) was selected as the best article published in 1992 in the Academy of Management Journal. Professor Balkin has written or edited several books on human resources, the management of innovation, compensation, and other topics. He has served as Chair of the Management Department at the University of Colorado and also served on advisory boards of nonprofit organizations. Professor Balkin serves as the associate editor for Human Resource Management Review and has previously served on the editorial boards of the Academy of Management Journal and the Journal of Management. He has served as an expert witness on cases dealing with employment and pay discrimination. Professor Balkin has extensive international experience as a scholar and teacher and was a visiting professor at the University of Toulouse (France), Copenhagen Business School (Denmark), Helsinki University of Technology (Finland), University of Regensburg (Germany), ESADE Business School (Spain), National University of Singapore, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, HEC Montreal (Canada), and Indian School of Business (India).

Robert L. Cardy is a Professor in the Department of Management at the University of Texas at San Antonio. He received his PhD in industrial/organizational psychology from Virginia Tech in 1982. He is an ad hoc reviewer for a variety of journals, including the Academy of Management Journal and the Academy of Management Review. He is editor and cofounder of the Journal of Quality Management. Professor Cardy has been recognized for his research, teaching, and service. He was ranked in the top 20 in research productivity for the decade 1980–1989 based on the number of publications in the Journal of Applied Psychology. He was doctoral coordinator in Arizona State University’s management department for five years and received a University Mentor Award in 1993 for his work with doctoral students. He served as department chair for seven years at UTSA. He authored a regular column on current issues in HRM for over ten years and received an Academy of Management certificate for outstanding service as a columnist for the HR division newsletter. Professor Cardy was a 1992 recipient of a certificate for significant contributions to the quality of life for students at ASU. His research focuses on performance appraisal and effective HRM practices.

easy read

This is one of the best textbooks that I've had to read for a class. Very easy to read and understand concepts. I have actually read the chapters rather than skim through them. I even read ahead to take quizzes in my class.

Great value for class requirement

I was concerned that this would not be the full book required for my class due to the cheap price (which was about a third of what it cost elsewhere). But, it is the full volume, just printed more cheaply in the East. The book arrived very quickly and in great condition. It definitely offered a great value, as it was cheaper to buy the economy version than to rent the original, while still offering the same content.

About the Author
Karl Gerstner was born in Switzerland in 1930. His work has been exhibited in museums and publications throughout the world. He was the subject of a 1973 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York dedicated to the method and philosophy of his work and entitled "think program." He has been nominated for the Art Director's Club of New York's Hall of Fame and was made an honorary member of the Art Directors Club of Germany in 1992.

Mr Gerstner and the true meaning of Akzidenz Grotesk.

I first be came aware of the work of Karl Gerstner while at art college in the late Fifties. I bought a copy of his first book 'Cold Art?', written in German, so I couldn't read it but I could follow the excellent analytical diagrams explaining the basis of mathematical abstracts as produced by Piet Mondrian, Josef Albers, Max Bill, Richard P Lohse, Gerstner and others. Thirteen pages of 'Cold Art' and spreads from his other books are also shown in this beautiful book of Gerstner's career.

His creative work from the fifties and sixties always used the typeface Akzidenz Grotesk (Standard Medium in English speaking countries) for text and headlines, despite, as he says, there being no italic. To make this type more complete he redesigned it as Gerstner Program and his work on this and another of his faces, IBM Original is explained in detail in the book.

His books, publication design, typefaces, logos, ads, packaging and thoughts on design and related areas of creativity are well presented throughout the book. I especially liked the last few pages which have some examples of his amazing computer generated art (in spreads from the Swiss magazine Basler Magazin) and this is why I find Gerstner so interesting, his graphic work covers such a wide area and interestingly, in the book, he also provides an intellectual underpinning of his creativity.

An extraordinary tale of an extraordinary soldier

Thomas Rathsack embodies all the characteristics of the consummate soldier, one as humble as he is deadly. His story is that of Denmark's elite Jaeger Corps - one of several of the U.S.'s unsung European allies in the GWOT that did respectable work in-theater, but quietly and without ostentation or fanfare. He speaks plainly, without pretense or arrogance, despite the fact that his stories of his time as a soldier and NGO minesweeper are truly awe-inspiring and worthy of deference.

Too much non-military story, but nice to see a Danish perspective

I have read a good number of books about the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. They fall into three vague categories: personal memoirs, journalistic studies and experiences, and academic/think tank studies. Each have their advantages and disadvantages. You won't get much about what it's like to sit in the desert for days under the sun from a RAND study, but you aren't going to get an accurate assessment of measures of effectiveness or airpower contributions from Sgt Rock's memoir. Journalists tend to have their own agenda, and while are usually good writers, their bias can get in the way of the "Story".

This book, of course, is a memoir. It is an interesting memoir as it is by one of the minor countries involved in the GWOT. Minor in that it is small, and cannot contribute the same level of support as the major powers. This means that the training, the technology, the combat support, and culture will be different.

If you are looking for a book filled with exciting battles, or at least one big battle a la Lone Survivor or Black Hawk Down, you aren't going to get it. This book is about the life of Mr Rathsack, in and out of the army. So you will get a long chapter about his life between stints in the service, for example, that may or may not interest the reader.

As for the wartime chapters, they are interesting but again, not filled with massive firefights, lots of men down, A-10s rolling in followed by Apaches, etc. The unit operated and mostly kept in "stealth" - a success to be sure - but this makes for a little bit slower reading. Still, again, it was nice to read the experiences of the war from a non US-UK perspective.

The epilogue was quite interesting - about the controversy regarding the book and accusations of revealing sensitive and classified information. This same issue came up with books about killing bin Laden. I have to say, regrettably, I do not agree with Mr. Rathsack. Government employees take an oath to not reveal sensitive information - even if it's in the news - without permission. Is it fair? I don't know. Is it frustrating? Sure, but in return you get to shoot some cool weapons, go to exotic places, etc. When an official government person publishes something, even if it is in the news, they are confirming it - giving it increased credibility. You take the pay, you wear the uniform, you follow the rules. What if every soldier, intelligence officer, etc. made their own decisions of what was sensitive and what wasn't?

And in this book, it was generally not an issue of revealing criminality, incompetence, or other whistle-blowing like issues.

If there is a "crime" in this book, though, is it's blowing through too fast the combat parts, and dwelling too much on peacetime.

Good book

The book was good and a quick read. It wasn't the most interesting, but wasn't really boring either. Just not much exciting occurred ( that he can talk about - I hope ) and not many interesting and funny stories outside of his couple missions.

The most memorable portion of this book in my opinion is the last chapter about the drama during publication.

Everlasting Childhood.

Such a wonderful story! Korie is so spunky and a wonderful protagonist, her character development is some of the best mental transformations I've ever read. And, Veronica certainly throws in a few surprises every now and then herself, quite the 'ah ha' moments abound. This is my favorite story with a mental transformation. A lot of twists and turns, smiles abound for the reader. And the reader can ask themselves, if put in Korie's situation, what would they do?
