Its author, Nicolas Remy, was a notorious magistrate who boasted of having personally condemned and burned hundreds of witches. Remy's collection of notes, opinions, and court records features lurid details of satanic pacts and sexual perversity as well as the particulars of numerous trials. A work of tremendous historical significance, this volume is complemented by an introduction and notes by Montague Summers, a celebrated occult historian and expert on witchcraft and supernatural lore.

Fascinating and Appalling. Must Read.

I have read several of Montague Summers' translations of old witchcraft documents, and this was by far the most readable .. as well as the most infuriating. Summers himself (in the 1920s) maintained the rather odd belief that witchcraft was real, still posed a threat to society, and still should be considered a crime. So he has produced here an extremely sympathetic translation of Nicolas Remy's infamous treatise.

This book is not really a witchfinder's manual, as are the _Malleus Maleficarum_ of Kramer and Sprenger, and the _Compendium Maleficarum_ of Guazzo. It is instead sort of a collection of curiosities and stories about the villainous activities of witches, with feeble arguments "proving" that witches are indeed capable of working such evil with the help of their attendant demons. Lots of particulars are cited from cases over which Remy himself had presided as a civil magistrate. Remy was not a churchman, nor an officer of the Inquisition. Typically the Church prosecuted witches for heresy and tried them in the ecclesiastical courts, after which they were turned over to the civil authorities for more tangible crimes (usually murder, committed by magical means.) Sentencing and execution was usually left to the civil court. Remy boasts of having personally condemned more than 200 witches during his career up to the time of writing. His prose style is conversational, almost casual. It is easy to read and is full of sensational and salacious detail which lend it a certain grim fascination.

What is alarming about this book is Remy's unashamed credulity and his obvious unintelligence. He appears to be extremely well-read, but without any critical or analytical faculty whatsoever. With Kramer and Sprenger and Guazzo, I got the impression that these were intelligent men under the grips of a delusion; they arrived at false conclusions because they started with false information, but their reasoning was essentially valid. Remy's conclusions are illogical. His statements defy common sense. He contradicts himself from chapter to chapter, sometimes from page to page. His logic is flawed; his syllogisms tend to combine an A and B which do NOT imply C. Even in Summers' translation it is painfully clear that the author has willfully ignored the obvious in favor of his pre-formed assumptions. What's terrifying is the thought that this buffoon was a JUDGE ... he had the power of life and death over people in the district of Lorraine. He seems quite pleased with himself as he smugly relates stories of how poor old women were frightened and browbeaten and tortured into confessing all kinds of grotesque and imaginary crimes, then delivered to "divine justice" aka burning at the stake. Especially horrifying is Book 3, chapter 6 in which he tells how the Devil urges his disciples to suicide when they are in prison, in order to deny the Church its victory and to secure the witches' souls away from any chance of Redemption. It does not occur to our author that an innocent person, wrongly arrested and tortured, knowing that a person accused of witchcraft has virtually no chance of escape, may choose a quick death rather than face further torture followed by the pain and humiliation of public execution as a witch. Suicide is a desperate act of one who has lost all hope, condemned by the very Church which was supposed to PROTECT them from evil, not perpetrate it upon them. Remy sees his victims' suicides only as conclusive proof of their guilt. So much for Christ's teachings about mercy and compassion.

Remy's _Demonolatry_ is a testament of madness, and a reminder that such madness ruled the "civilized" world only a few centuries ago. Should be required reading for students of history, law, and politics. We should keep history's mistakes before our minds as an example, lest we end up repeating them.

I would also like to go on record as saying: the 2008 Dover edition has one of the ugliest cover designs I have ever seen. Honestly, it's atrocious. But as the saying goes, I can't judge the book by it. This is an ugly but a significant work, well worth having.

Well, talk about preachy. No true information about the subject, only the moral and spiritual pitfalls of those who don't follow the popular christian concepts. While the book's contents were quaint, its information was rather lacking. Nice work of fiction.

Truly the COMPLETE guide

SURF TRAVEL is the ultimate guide and a must have in any surfers library. The book contains so many details and hidden gems that a true surfer cannot just read it once, instead you will constantly refer to it for information on surfing and general travel tips. It is not just a list of spots (as most surf guides are) SURF TRAVEL has information on exercises to prepare you for your trip, local lingo and even local types of beer. Well worth owning.

How often does one say "awesome!" about a textbook?

I'm a professor of strategy, and have been teaching Strategic Management for undergraduates, MBAs, and executives (in and outsides the U.S.) for over 10 years, and never found a text that satisfied my desire to present top-notch material in a synthesized fashion. But I now have found this book--Frank Rothaermel's new Strategic Management text is really a brand-new text that makes a quantum leap forward in presenting cutting edge theory and examples leveraging the unique intersection of theory/concepts, empirical research, and practical application. Strategic management is about superior positioning for competitive advantage, and no other book on the market except Frank's has been able to position itself in this sweet spot. Not to mention the cutting edge examples that today's students can relate to (Facebook, Tesla Motors, Apple, BYD, Tata Group, and so on). Another great differentiator is that Frank wrote not only 12 MiniCases (great to get discussion started) but also 15 full-length cases that are perfectly integrated with the text to teach concepts and frameworks presented therein. The full-length cases also come with financial data already prepared in spreadsheets for ratio analysis, another first in the strategy textbook industry. It makes you a BETTER teacher!

I'm a tenure track professor of strategy with many prior years of industry work experience and I have reviewed many textbooks trying to find a good match for my students at the undergraduate, masters and executive levels. Until this book, I have not been successful in this search.

I knew that I liked Frank Rothaermel's new textbook "Strategic Management" when I had a chance to review an early version of it myself. It has great examples and very crisp yet rigorous strategic concepts throughout the book. The text also has an entire chapter on innovation which I believe is quite important for our students to consider as they graduate and get into today's workforce. The book has a wonderful and unique chapter on three different lenses of viewing or measuring competitive advantage. I personally like the pithy chapter openers which not only relate to the material in each chapter but also have a `case closing thoughts' for each chapter to bring the ideas home for the students. The `strategy highlights' are another of my favorite features. They are excellent ice breakers for class discussions. Students love the examples of Threadless, Starbucks, Nintendo and Pixar and Frank has done a great job of tying the exemplar firm's to the tool and topics in each chapter.

What surprised me however was the degree that my students related to Dr. Rothaermel's textbook. Until using this text I have rarely if ever seen comments like this in the "what did you like about the course?" student evaluations... " The textbook was easy to read and had great current examples that made it easier to understand.", "Not only was the text extremely useful, but it applied to everything we did." , "the textbook was NOT boring, it included up-to-date information about companies that was very interesting". "The textbook actually enhanced the learning experience and helped emphasize the points learned in class with real live companies and how they used the tools to gain a competitive advantage." "It was one of the most interesting textbooks I've had in my college courses". Yes these are actual quotes from my student course evaluations.

Further, my actual course evaluation scores are UP when using this textbook. I've taught 16 sections of this course thus far and my average student evaluation is about 4.6 out of 5.0. However fall 2011 I had the chance to beta test Dr. Rothaermel's book and my student evaluation scores soared up to 4.91! Same course, same professor, different textbook.... You be the judge!

A rare find - a strategy book that works well in the classroom and in the field!

Strategic Management by Frank Rothaermel is a rare find - a great strategy book for the classroom, and an equally useful book for the manager/practitioner in the field. I spent over 20 years in the field working in corporations, small to medium sized business, and starting and running my own businesses. Rothaermel's book on strategy finally replaced my worn out copies of Michael Porter's books on strategy as my 'go-to books' that I used as my strategy guides at GE and AT&T in the field.

After completing my PhD in strategy I have used many textbooks at the undergraduate and graduate level. When the McGraw-Hill team shared with me that 'yet another' strategy book was coming out I admit I was skeptical. When I heard Frank Rothaermel was involved I agreed to review it and give it a try. I have had great success using the book the last two semesters in an undergraduate class of over 400 students, and with over 100 graduate students.

There are a number of good strategy books on the market - what gives this book a competitive advantage? In my opinion, and based on my experience using the book, there are several points: 1) It is clearly written, the concepts are logically connected together, and the mini-cases are well chosen for each chapter to illustrate key points. My students actually enjoyed reading the book! 2) Rothaermel does an excellent job integrating Porter's five forces/industry structure framework and the resource based view concepts from Barney - few books give such a balanced treatment of the two views that are fundamental to understanding strategy. 3) Frank includes a quantitative view of how to determine a firm's competitive advantage (see chapter 5 - if you are a follower of M. Porter, you know he is an economist and he insists that measures of competitive advantage must be quantified - Rothaermel does this nicely). All of these points apply to both the Concepts, and the Concepts and Cases versions.

If you need cases to go with the concepts, the Concepts and Cases brings 30 some full length cases of a wide variety to the reader - the cases are up-to-date and there are several for each chapter. I don't use more than one or two of the cases in the undergraduate course but I have them all to draw from (fortunately McGraw-Hill has a very easy way to customize a book and include just what you need). However, for a graduate course I use six to eight cases. There's even a nice guide that helps you select the cases that are a good fit for the topics. Again, I've found I can save my students some money using the custom create feature, and with 30 cases it will be a long time before I worry that the same case has been repeated. Also, for many cases, there are Excel spreadsheets available direct from the case data with firm data so you can drive the quantitative points of the analysis.

In summary, if you are looking for a very versatile and up-to-date book with a host of support materials, I strongly suggest you consider Rothaermel's Strategic Management by McGraw-Hill - this is a strategy book that has a clear competitive advantage over its rivals.

Very Comprehensive Survey of Ceramics Techniques & Materials

This is a large book chock full of information, and provides an in-depth survey of ceramics. There are many photographs about techniques and many illustrations of beautiful artistic ceramics pieces. Also it contains lots of technical information, tables, etc.

Since other reviews have covered the merits of this book quite well, I'll mention a few issues:

First, there are lots of sample photos of different clay bodies under different firings and different glaze colors and combinations, etc., but they are all *way too small* to really see the characteristics of each sample. Also sometimes there is a series of photos, e.g. throwing a pot, building a kiln, and when they are all arranged on the page, each one is too small (and many are b&w, from previous editions?) Otherwise the book is very well illustrated with a wide variety of work.

The glaze discussion does not cover the properties of glaze bases and coloring oxides much at all, which is something I would expect in a book of this comprehensiveness. It does spent some time on commercial fritted stains and Mayco glazes, which other books don't, and can be useful to some, especially for low-temp work. But if you really want to get into glazes, this is not the book.

For many advanced topics, she has just a mention that leaves me hungry for more. E.g. lusters she briefly mentions using and making, but Rhodes has a much more thorough discussion of making lusters. Paperclay is mentioned briefly but not enough to really tell me how to make it or use it. For many of the topics in the book, more detailed discussions are possible and likely available elsewhere. However she has assembled lots of brief mentions of different and experimental work that you might not encounter in other ceramics survey books, so it is useful for knowing what else I want to look into.

A Childhood in Exile

By now, the story of Oscar Wilde's glorious rise and tragic fall are well-known. But most readers are unfamiliar with the story of how Wilde's wife and two sons were affected by his fall from grace. "Son of Oscar Wilde" is a beautifully written and poignant account of how a young boy's life was afected by his father's notoriety. Like his father, Holland carefully avoids self-pity in describing his life's events and still manages to convey a sense of loss and disorientation which is most heartwrenching. Holland's recollections of his father are priceless, and the book is an essential volume for anyone interested in Wilde the personality. Amazon.com was able to find a copy of this book for me in no time at all, and at a very reasonable price.

A Heartfelt Story of Loss and Betrayal

Vyvan Holland was just a child when his beloved father Oscar Wilde "disappeared" from his life in 1895. SON OF OSCAR WILDE is a remarkable story told by Wilde's youngest son. Holland makes no effort to answer burning questions about the demise of his father--one of the greatest figures of moden English literature. He never defends or condemns his father's actions. He cherishes the memory of a loving father. The Wilde family crisis changed Holland's life forever. Holland never saw his father or had contact with him after 1895. He was in his late teens before he was told the actual truth about his father. He had been so carefully protected from the truth by his mother's family that he assumed his father had been a bigamist or criminal. It was a relief to learn the reason his father had been imprisoned. Holland wrote his autography more than 50 years after the death of his father. He tells his story as he lived it. In 1895, Wilde was sentenced to two years of hard labor in prison for his homosexuality. The court confiscated his home and his property leaving his family broken-hearted. Even Holland's precious toys were sold at auction for pennies. The scandal was so great that his wife and 2 sons left for exile in Europe. Their surnames were changed and they lived in fear of the identity of their father being discovered. His mother died not long afterward during exile leaving the sons in the care of a guardian. Alone and lost and ashamed, the brothers were sent off to separate boarding schools. The brothers rarely saw each other again. Their mother's family made every effort to erase the memory of Oscar Wilde from their lives. Wilde died in 1900 never being able to make contact with his sons. Holland's writing can be dry at times and he often jumps forward and back in time but overall he has an incredible story to tell. Most people know the basic story of Wilde's demise. A brilliant literary mind went silent and Wilde could never write again after release from prison. The truth about Wilde's suffering wife and sons is finally told in this book. Although the family was forced into exile, their mother did not abandon Wilde and kept in contact with him until her tragic death. She knew his suffering but did not consent to allowing contact with the son. Only years later, did Holland learn of Wilde's great writings. So great was the scandal, that Wilde's books were basically banned in England. Several lives were ruined in a scandal that would be nothing more than jiucy fodder for the tabloids today. SON OF OSCAR WILDE gives some rare insight into a story that had never been fully told.

Father and Son

For more than 20 years Oscar Wilde has been one of my favourite author, perhaps the favourite author. Because the life was taken away from him he could not wrote all the plays, poems and stories I want so much to read, so I have read his works over and over again. Each time I find something new/something to enjoy; partly it is his wonderful point of view, partly his good sense of humour. For a long time I have been aware of his downfall, but don't know what exactly happened until recently. I also knew that he was married and that he and his wife had two sons, and sometimes I revolved in my mind: What happened to them? Where did they go? So when I found the book Son of Oscar Wilde at Amazon.com I bought it immediately. This is a beautiful book by man who knew and loved his father, but suddenly his father was no longer taken place in his life. Why? It took him more than ten years to let himself to try to find the answer. In this book he tells the world how. Everybody who like Wilde's works, love an honesty, are interested in the Victorian time or want to try to understand the consequences of hate should do themselves the favour to read Son of Oscar Wilde. Vyvyan Holland wrote: ..."my father's character was his great humanity, his love of life and of his fellow-men, his sympathy with suffering. He was the kindest and gentles of men, an he hated to see anyone suffer." After reading Son of Oscar Wilde I do believe this is also the description of his son. Vyvyan Holland died in the year 1968 so I will not get the opportunity to thank him for his book, nor can I thank his father for all the good times he have gave me, but both, father and son, deserved my thanks.

The ideal companion of the Greenberg's handbook

This is an handbook of operative neurosurgical techniques. There are a lot of informations about the operating room supplies, the surgical instruments and equipment.
Are also present the major neurosurgical procedures, even if someone is not so common in the daily practice (p.e. Dolenc approach), and, there are not information about the posterior fossa approach(there is just the lateral and the supracerebellar approaches but no mention about the IV ventricle approach or something about the IV° ventricle or cerebellar tumors).
Maybe it also lack of figures and illustrations. There are not drawings for the surgical position and the Instrument Trays chapter are to much rich of informations (it, in my opinion could be more useful for a nurse).
I have presented this book to a couple of Collegues that live and work in a country in which the operating rooms supplies and the surgical equipment are not like in the USA or the Europe; so, it could be useful to bold the "essential" instruments or supplies for those who live and work in other countries.
I hope that the next edition will be more complete, and i will buy it again for sure.

not bad , not Greenberg

I bought it with high expectations believing that it would be as great as Greenberg.What a disappointment!It has 200 pages in the beginning totally useless, it has very few figures and it could have been more tightly written in fewer pages.The 3 stars go because it covers most of the neurosurgical procedures by providing the basic steps of them.With a little more work a good second edition is possible.
