About the Author
Philomena Essed is Senior Researcher at the University of Amsterdam, Amsterdam Research Institute for Global Issues and Development Studies, and Visiting Professor at the University of California, Irvine. She is the author of Everyday Racism (1990), Understanding Everyday Racism (1991), and Diversity: Gender, Color and Culture (1996).

David Theo Goldberg is Director of the University of California Humanities Research Institute and Professor of African American Studies and Criminology, Law, and Society at the University of California, Irvine. He is the author of Racist Culture: Philosophy and the Politics of Meaning (1993); Racial Subjects: Writing on Race in America (1997); and Ethical Theory and Social Issues (second edition, 1995). He co-edits Social Identities: Journal for the Study of Race, Nation and Culture.

About the Author
Dr Monika Hestad is a brand and design strategist, an associate lecturer at Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design in London and heads the consultancy Brand Valley Design. She has more than a decade's experience as a designer, and has conducted branding and design work in high-tech, FMCG and service sectors, private and public, working with brands including Nokia, Yellow Pages, Thrane & Thrane, Kvaerner, NokiaSiemens Networks, Mars, Stokke, Ringnes (Carlsberg), and Procter & Gamble. In addition to regular teaching in London and at the Oslo School of Architecture and Design, she lectures at other prestigious institutions and teaches entrepreneurs and designers in Beijing and Seoul. Hestad has a Masters in Industrial Design from the Oslo School of Architecture and Design and a PhD in Branding and Design from the same school.

Should be read in conjunction with lectures available free on iTunes.

I bought this book after listening to about half of Mr. Stearns' 36 lectures on evolution which are available free through iTunes U as one of the Open Yale courses. My hope is that some of the illustrations that Mr. Stearns is using in his lectures (which a listener cannot see), will be in the textbook. If you, like me, are not a biologist, you might want to dip your toe in the water by listening to the lectures before tackling the book. I am very impressed with both.

Highly Detailed and Approachable

This book has been a joy to read for a variety of reasons, but I must agree that it takes time to grasp all of the concepts presented, and prospective reader ought to have a devoted interest in the subject--I would not recommend this book as an introduction of any kind. Based on the depth and complexity of the information this book contains, I would recommend it for a senior undergraduate level course, or even a graduate level course.

Here's the thing: Even though the title states that this is an introduction to evolution, you really need to have some foundational understanding of biology, statistics, geology, genetics, and chemistry in order to fully grasp everything Stearns and Hoekstra are saying. They do a fantastic job of defining terms, sometimes more than once throughout the text, and all of the highlighted terms can be found in the glossary in the back, but many other terms from the subjects listed are not readily defined and assume the reader knows them already. Luckily, they do include an appendix on genetics if you need a refresher.

But what I love most about this book, despite its difficulty (I've had to read some passages multiple times), is the depths to which it dives in terms of details. I'm reminded of a child constantly asking "Why? Why?" every time something is explained, and Stearns/Hoekstra continue to answer those "why's."

The contents of the book are logically organized, and the subheadings read almost like vignettes; Stearns/Hoekstra use numerous, concrete examples to illustrate the concepts they present, and the content itself is chunked in a more organic rather than linear fashion. They ask questions, and proceed to answer them, or explain why they can't. They provide a wide variety of perspectives and theories concerning evolutionary research. Because of this organization, not a single portion of the book is dull or boring--it's simply packed with information.

Overall, I very highly recommend this book as a definitive text on evolution, as long as readers are aware of the need for basic knowledge in a variety of life science subjects, and are willing to spend a great deal of time reading and rereading. This book is well worth the effort, and I never thought there could be so much to learn about evolution!

thorough and clear explanation of an interesting subject

This is the main textbook that Prof. Stearns uses for his course on Evolutionary Biology, which can be found on the Open Yale website. The 36 lectures there can be downloaded and watched in conjunction with reading his textbook. I have found Prof. Stearns to be a great lecturer, able to make his complex subject matter easy to be understood by someone like myself who is not a biologist. His textbook is a great complement to the lectures as it also is written in a clear and understandable fashion. Used together, this textbook and the Open Yale lectures provide a wonderful opportunity for self-education for anyone really interested in learning more about the fascinating subject of evolution and its current scientific status.

About the Author
Hans Levenbach starts his career at AT&T Bell Laboratories as an applied statistician, participating in forecasting project and developing analytical support systems for the Bell Operating Companies. Over the years he has many years of teaching experience as Adjunct Professor in the Business Schools of Columbia University and New York University. In 1996, he was a Visiting Professor at the Stern School of Business at NYU. In his professional life, he served as President, Treasurer and Board member of the International Institute of Forecasters (IIF). In June 2003 he was elected Fellow of the IIF. Hans graduated from Acadia University (Canada) with a degree in Physics and Mathematics, and received an MSc in Electrical Engineering from Queen's University (Canada) and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Mathematical Statistics from the University of Toronto. Hans is involved in all aspects of the company and particularly enjoys working with forecasting practitioners and software developers.

James P. Cleary held a number of leadership positions in marketing and finance at AT&T, Lucent Technologies, Avaya, and New York Telephone Company. Recently, he developed market sizing and quantified business case value propositions that demonstrated the product benefits from the perspectives of the end users, the service providers and the manufacturer. He directed the business management functions of strategic planning, business planning, forecasting and results analysis. He also led a forecast improvement team that improved the accuracy of the customer team demand forecasts. He was the Director-Market Research & Analysis in the Business Communications Services unit. His financial positions included the CFO-Data Communications Services and CFO-Computer Systems. Mr. Cleary developed courses in time series and econometric modeling for AT&T. He also developed a course for managers of the forecasting function.

Great Overview of Myanmar's History!

This book gave me a great account of Myanmar before I travelled to the country two weeks ago. I am here for part of a gap year and this book has really helped me understand Myanmar's intricate past that has led to the creation of this misunderstood region.

By far the best available history of native peoples adapting to and incorporating horses into their cultures.

This is the best available book on this subject. Yes, it is an academic study (each chapter is followed by a notes section), but I find the writing to be quite good and the whole book well-written and an extremely informative read. The book has many illustrations, some of them rare period photos, and some of the black and white photos of representative landscapes were a bit blurry and not so useful. There's a nice section of color plates, as well. The author's overall approach is to blend history (drawn partly from contemporary accounts, a particularly rich source for the Southern Cone), ethnography and archaeology into his narrative.

I would quibble a little with the title. The book is only nominally "worldwide" because two "continent" sections are brief. He looks at Australia, South Africa and New Zealand rather quickly, with the main portion of the book on North and South America. The South African section has a too cursory account of the fascinating story of how some groups became mounted and in effect formed a new people (much as happened in areas of the Americas). Perhaps that will be another book.

In the long portion about North America, he discusses particular areas, quite varied in responses to horses and in ecosystem (he gets a bit into how horses altered these, not enough covered for my taste). These include the Southern plains, the Great Basin, the Pacific Northwest and California. Not all readers will agree, but I found the section on the Comanches the best, and found his comparison between the Metis (Canadian) and the Comancheros (New Mexican) to be especially interesting.

In the equally long portion about South America, he covers in most detail Guajira (a peninsula in Venezuela with an especially formidable mounted people called the Wayuu, who remained independent until nearly 1900. He also covers in great detail the Chaco region (centering on what is now Paraguay) and the Pampas area. The detail is excellent and the accounts of the various people are the best I have read (I don't read Spanish, so there are probably superb accounts I am unaware of).

He covers in all several dozen peoples. One aspect is that the encounter with horses altered old systems in many ways and in effect produced new ethnicities from the old (much the same happened elsewhere; see the work of Richard White on the Great Lakes region of the US, fore example).

The book has an interesting list of tribal names as they were known to English and Spanish speakers, and the words they use to identify themselves.

Scintilating topic, poor book

This book has a great topic and it should have been tremendous. Instead it is pedantic and poorly written. The author would have been a great research assistant but the writing should have been left to someone with at least a little skill as an author and storyteller. It is written by one of those British academics who think commentaries on squabbles among academics are so so fascinating and quaint that they should receive more focus than the many stories of horse cultures, most of which are replaced with abstract categories and lists of poorly defined terms. I have no personal stake in any of this. Just a disappointed reader. Considering that it is an unusually expensive ebook it is best avoided.
