Realistic portrayal of GLBTQ bullying
By Neutron Lurver Reviews
In Paul Volponi's Crossing Lines, Adonis is a normal teenage guy: one who plays on the football team, wants to date the hot girl, and just wants to fit in. When new student Alan enrolls at his school and becomes the butt of everyone's homophobic jokes, Adonis has to decide where he stands. Does he side with his sister and his potential girlfriend, both of whom support Alan's lipstick-wearing ways? Or does he does go along with the team and humiliate Alan at every opportunity, even when it becomes a threat to Alan's safety?

CROSSING LINES excels most in its realistic portrayal of bullying, prejudice, and what it means for someone to go with the crowd or against it. Readers are given an honest depiction of the slurs and threats thrown at GLBTQ students through Adonis' first-person perspective, and Adonis' internal dialogue and insecurities about himself also felt authentic. As a character, Adonis shows believable growth as he changes throughout the book. Family also plays an important role in the novel, and the competing viewpoints of Adonis' parents provide another realistic representation of how people are or are not supportive of those who are different.

Even though the book excelled in its honest depiction of bullying and intolerance, the novel itself didn't have the emotional impact I had hoped. The climax occurred too quickly and too near the end, and the closing scene felt trite and a bit hollow. The almost singular focus of the storyline was also very limited. While this may make the book useful as a teaching tool, it felt basic as a novel. Finally, while the writing worked style worked well as internal dialogue for Adonis, it didn't stand out.

Due to the book's candid approach and easy plot, CROSSING LINES will be a great read for students struggling with acceptance of GLBTQ students, especially boys who should be able to identify with Adonis and the challenges he faces. However, for GLBTQ students looking for a story that resonates with them, I would recommend books by David Levithan or Nick Burd's The Vast Fields of Ordinary instead.

Something different
By YA Librarian
CrossingLines is a little different than the usual Paul Volponi book. Normally, we read about the inner city and how life is hard and unforgiving. This time we head to the suburbs in his latest novel and deal with the prejudices faced by a gay student.

Adonis is a football player. He's a jock. He's a great athlete and he has am image to uphold with his guy friends. Adonis is dating a girl(whose name I forgot and the book is at work!) who is also involved in the fashion club. Adonis is in love, but things get complicated when the new kid, Alan, joins the fashion club. Alan is a gender bending teen and Adonis' jock friends want nothing to do with him.

The football team hates Alan, and Adnois is caught in the middle of their little war. Does he go along with his team to hurt Alan and also destroy his relationship with his girlfriend, or does he do the right thing?

I enjoyed the book. It was something different than the usual stuff Mr. Volponi writes, though I am fond of his other books because they get my male students to read. I like the message, and think this is an important novel to read.

God but not great treatment of a front-burner topic
By John Wetterholt
How do you respond when a clearly different student transfers to your school and makes friends with your sister...when your own friends are prone to bully a ridicule the new kid? That is the question faced by high school football player Adonis when he meets Alan, a cross-dresser who becomes not only president of the fashion club but the target of unrelenting scorn from Adonis' teammates and father.

Overall I found the book to be quite enjoyable, with a message the aches to be explored and expressed. Part of the way through I was starting to wonder how the absolutely necessary character development would be worked in, given Volponi's rather spare, almost Hemingway-esque treatment of character and plot, but as Adonis started to "come around" and move away from his friends' plan to attack Alan (really there's no better word), I gained more and more respect for Adonis and his fortitude, despite his later self-criticism of believing he should have done more sooner.

Alan, I think, could have been portrayed a little more vividly. Perhaps it was Volponi's desire to present him in somewhat muted tones so as not to have him appear stereotypically flamboyant, but given his morph into dress-wearing Alana, I feel the story could have absorbed a bit more flash in his personality. He was delightfully dry and sardonic when such was called for; more needed to be done to make him truly notable. Some of Adonis' friends were a little too close to the familiar jock types from Central Casting, but considering the author's focus on Adonis' mind and heart I can forgive a little cardboard. Adonis' own self-image issues were a nice subplot, and the muffed play at the end of the football game was totally appropriate.

Clearly this book was a step outside the comfort zone for the author, and one that is more than adequate to the task. After years of writing dialogue for Harlem toughs, creating an authentic gay character was a challenge, and he got a lot of things right. But ultimately the kickoff was not run back for a touchdown.

In their present-day tourist trap of an Irish seaside town, famed for its supposed involvement with selkies in the past, three sisters are faced with the sudden disappearance of their mother. Crushed by the loss, their father is struggling to carry on. To make matters worse, there are rumors afloat in the village that their mother herself is a selkie who has now shed her human form and gone back to sea. As Cordie Sullivan, the oldest daughter, tries to learn more about her mother's vanishing, she must find the strength to help her family move ahead, even as she discovers an increasing number of clues that point to a hidden island off the coast―a mythical kingdom of the selkies.

From School Library Journal
Gr 3–6—Eleven-year-old Cordelia Sullivan has put the pieces together. Her mother owned a soft, silky black coat, read her stories about selkies, loved the ocean, and showed Cordelia and her sisters the way to an enchanted island. Her mother and the black coat are missing, so the obvious conclusion Cordelia draws is that her mother donned her sealskin and rejoined the selkie kingdom. The trouble is, Cordelia doesn't exactly believe in selkies. What follows is one bad decision after another as the girl tries to help her family and bring her mother home. On an ill-fated trip to the island, Cordelia and her sisters are rescued by a large, black seal. Is the seal really their mother trapped in her sealskin or is Cordelia simply guilty of finally believing her own tales? The surprise ending leaves the door open for a little belief in magic. VERDICT A general purchase; give this to readers who like contemporary fiction mixed with a hint of the supernatural.—Kelly Roth, Bartow County Public Library, Cartersville, GA

The prose is elegant, beautiful and at times haunting, and the plot flows well
By KidsReads
About loss, responsibility, magic and family, SECRETS OF SELKIE BAY manages to do something fairly rare in the world of middle grade novels --- it reads like it's a book anyone could enjoy. I was surprised from the start that the prose doesn't talk down to its audience, doesn't expect kids to refuse to face some difficult concepts and dark themes. Not that the book is difficult, exactly, but it is complex in ways that caught me a little off guard and made me enjoy the book on a deeper level.

The story follows Cordelia, the oldest daughter of a family whose mother has just disappeared. Like magic, one day she was there and the next was gone. Her disappearance has left a wound in the family, and Cordelia, only 11 years old herself, struggles to pick up the slack. She watches her two younger sisters and tries to earn some money, but the stress and the anger at her abandonment festers and she finds herself more and more upset and yearning.

SECRETS OF SELKIE BAY does an amazing job with its young protagonists, namely Cordelia and her younger sister Ione. The bond of sisterhood that draws them together is often tested as Ione chafes under Cordelia's attempts to make up for their mother's absence. And when that absence becomes too difficult to explain, it is their relationship that creates the story of the Selkies: the story that their mother didn't leave of her own will but had to return to the sea as a Selkie and is now trapped in seal form. It's tragic and it's gripping and it's dark, and it's also what makes this book so magical, what gives it a dynamic and moving story arc.

Because, though at first the story is a lie that Cordelia tells to quiet her sister, it soon becomes something more than that, and Cordelia finds herself wanting to believe it, too. It is the crux of a plot that overall might be mistaken as simple, but that I think is focused. There is a weight to SECRETS OF SELKIE BAY, a potency that would have easily been diluted by introducing more action, more characters, more storylines.

What SECRETS OF SELKIE BAY does is tell a very clean and emotional story featuring children that feel real. The only complaint I had was the conflict with the gruff old fisherman who hates Selkies. I didn’t think the book does a bad job with him, he just seemed a little too…out of place, at times, like he had nothing to do other than participate in the novel. Still, even he is used to good effect to build the mythology of the Selkies.

The book blurs the line between magic and mundane, making for a slightly surreal but very enjoyable experience. The prose is elegant, beautiful and at times haunting, and the plot flows wells; it held my attention tight before coasting into the ending that is powerful and effective. All in all, I think SECRETS OF SELKIE BAY provides an engaging and lyrical story of children coming to grips with their first brush of loss and adult responsibility, forced to grow up before their time but unable to fully slip from the magic of childhood. It is a story tinged with sadness and tragedy and barely controlled anger, but it is also a story of family and understanding and setting aside fear. All that in just under 200 pages. It's quite a read.

To the Reader

Like the first two editions, this new edition of Literary Criticism is designed as a supplemental text for introductory courses in both literature and literary criticism. In all three editions, the purpose of this text has always remained the same: to enable students to approach literature from a variety of practical and theoretical perspectives and to equip them with a theoretical and a practical understanding of how critics develop their interpretations. Its overall aim is to take the mystery out of working with and interpreting texts.

Like the first and second editions, the third edition holds to several key premises. First, I assume that there is no such thing as an "innocent" reading of a text. Whether our responses to a text are emotional and spontaneous or well reasoned and highly structured, all of our interpretations are based on underlying factors that cause us to respond in a particular way. What elicits these responses, and how a reader makes sense out of a text, is what really matters. It is the domain of literary theory to question our initial and all our further responses, our beliefs, our values, our feelings, and our eventual, overall interpretation. To understand why we respond to a text in a certain way, we must first understand literary theory and criticism.

Second, since our responses to any text have theoretical bases, I presume that all readers have a literary theory. Consciously or unconsciously, as readers we have developed a mind-set that fits or encompasses our expectations when reading any text. Somehow we all seem able to make sense of a text. The methods we use to frame our personal and public interpretations directly involve us in the process of literary criticism and theory and automatically make us practicing literary critics, whether we know it or not!

My third assumption rests on the observation that each reader's literary theory and accompanying methodology is either conscious or unconscious, complete or incomplete, informed or ill-informed, eclectic or unified. Since an unconscious, incomplete, ill-informed, and eclectic literary theory more frequently than not leads to illogical, unsound, and haphazard interpretations, I believe that a well-defined, logical, and clearly articulated theory will enable readers to develop their own methods of interpretation, permitting readers, in fact, to order, clarify, and justify their appraisals of a text in a consistent and rational manner.

Unfortunately, many readers cannot articulate their own literary theory and have little knowledge of the history and development of the ever-evolving principles of literary criticism. It is the goal of this book to introduce such students to literary theory and criticism, its historical development, and the various theoretical positions or schools of criticism that will enable them as readers to make conscious, informed, and intelligent choices about their own methods of interpretation.

Like the first two editions, this new edition introduces students to the basic concerns of literary theory in Chapter 1, which now includes a more expansive definition of literature itself. Chapter 2 places literary theory and criticism in historical perspective, starting with Plato and ending with modern-day theorists. Chapters 3 to 11 have all been revised, adding new terminology where appropriate. These chapters present the eleven major schools of criticism that have been developed in the twentieth century: New Criticism, Reader-Response Criticism, Structuralism, Deconstruction, Psychoanalytic Criticism, Feminism, Marxism, Cultural Poetics or New Historicism, and Cultural Studies, with an expanded discussion of Postcolonialism, including African American and Gender Studies. To maintain consistency and for ease of study, each of these chapters is identically organized. We begin with a brief Introduction followed by the Historical Development of each school of criticism. The Assumptions section, which sets forth the philosophical principles on which each school of criticism is based, is next. The Methodology section follows and serves as a "how-to" manual for explaining the techniques used by the various schools of criticism to formulate their interpretations of a text based upon their philosophical assumptions. All chapters in the third edition have received careful editing, with added terminology and scope of coverage. Throughout each of these sections, all key terms are in boldface type and are included in the new Glossary that appears at the back of this edition.

After the Methodology section, there is an expanded Questions for Analysis section in 'Chapters 3 through 11. This feature provides students with key questions to ask of a text in order to view that text from the perspective of the school of criticism under discussion. Some of the questions also ask students to apply their new-found knowledge to a particular text. Following this section is the Student Essay introduction, which poses critical questions to prepare students to read the example essay at the end of the Chapter. As in the first two editions, this undergraduate Student Essay provides an example for analysis, in which a student applies the principles and methods of interpretation of the school of criticism under discussion to one of nine primary texts in the Literary Selections. All of these primary texts can be found at the back of this edition.

Following the Student Essay warm-up is an updated Further Reading section. More comprehensive than in the first two editions, these selected references complement the more extensive References section found at the end of the text. After the Further Reading section, an updated Web Sites section appears that provides additional avenues of exploration for each of the schools of criticism. It is often the case that these World Wide Web addresses include links to other sites, thus providing opportunities to venture into the ever-expanding world of literary theory.

Since Literary Criticism is an introductory text, the explanations of the various schools of criticism should not be viewed as exhaustive but as a first step toward an understanding of some rather difficult concepts, principles, and methodologies. Similarly, the student essays should not be viewed as literary masterpieces but as undergraduate attempts to employ differing literary theories. Instructors and students alike should feel free to critique these essays and explore both their strengths and weaknesses. After reading each of the chapters in this new edition, it is hoped that readers will continue their own investigations of literary theory by exploring advanced theoretical texts and the primary works of both theoretical and practical critics.

Must-Have for Anyone with an interest in Literary Criticism
By TCC-O
Literary Criticism is one field of study that, no doubt, confuses most people with all the "-isms". Charles Bressler's book is a very useful tool in sorting out all these "-isms". This is a well-organized book: each chapter focuses on a different theory and discusses the theory's historical development, assumptions, methodology and even has questions for analysis (great help when writing a paper). The chapter culminates in two essays of application of that particular theory. This is the most popular and widely-circulated book among Lit Majors in my university. And this is one that you should definitely own.

Excellent guide for beginners.
By Hesper23
4 years of English studies, and I never once sat down to read literary theory until I had to take a course in it. Bressler's book helped me immensely to sort out the confusing mass that is theory. He lists a dozen or so major movements, such as formalism, reader-response criticism, structuralism, and post-structuralism, and also includes "additional" chapters on individual theorists such as Barthes, Levi-Strauss, etc. The explanations are concise. I also like how this professor turned author looks at theory from the student's perspective: he breaks down complicated ideas into manageable parts, without losing the essential point of the theory.

Another book that I found helpful was *Literary Theory: An Anthology* ed. Julie Rivkin. Unlike Bressler's book, this one is HUGE and very heavy, but nonetheless useful.

Actually, after reading more about literary theory, I'm no longer scared of it. So, if you're like me, a "newbie" to literary theory, you'd do well to start with this book.

too many typos in 4th edition
By Mark Trevor Smith
After looking at the third edition, I ordered this book for a class that I teach. The fourth edition contains many changes, all of them for the worse. The literary selections in the 4th edition are not as well chosen; the added paragraphs in the chapters on New Criticism and feminism are stylistically awkward and often confusing and repetitive, not to mention factually questionable (the claim that there were no voices in feminism between Pisan and Wollstonecraft!). Most distressing of all, this edition was apparently rushed to press in time for classes in fall 2006, for it contains typos about every five or six pages. The chapter on feminism alone has at least ten errors, e.g., "one in the same," "least" instead of "lest" (that mistake was carried over from the third edition), "lastest"!!!, inconsistency in verb number after "a variety of [plural nouns]," etc. The publisher should send an apology to all purchasers of this book, along with a list of errata. On the bright side: I tell my students that I can't penalize them too much for small errors, when the textbook contains so many!

Review
Written in a straightforward and highly readable style, Insect Physiology and Biochemistry is the hallmark of an experienced teacher who has dedicated 40 years of his career to teaching insect physiology and biochemistry…The principles, fundamentals, and illustrative examples provided are certainly a major milestone as an update of previous textbooks on insect physiology and biochemistry. The title will be an excellent sourcebook for students in entomology and an invaluable reference for scientists in various disciplines of insect science and its application.
- Insect Science and its Application, Vol. 22, No. 2, 2002

… a scholarly work … generally well written and the author makes his arguments effectively … a substantive contribution.
- Jon Harrison, Arizona State University

… a welcome addition to the literature.
-Thomas Miller, University of California, Riverside

Textbooks serve principally to introduce students to the basics of a discipline and awareness of the expanding literature of the subject. The recently published textbook Insect Physiology and Biochemistry by Professor James L. Nation of the University of Florida accommodates very well the need for a contemporary introduction to the subject. …Nation has clearly set the goal of demonstrating the basic aspects of insect physiology and biochemistry to undergraduate students largely free of the complexities required by more advanced students. This is achieved in a remarkably readable and well-illustrated volume… Nation has a splendid feel for his subject and his direct and lucid presentations clearly derive from his classroom lecturing experience. He concisely essays the quanta of knowledge to address the introductory needs of students, yet provides the references appropriate to lead the serious student well beyond. …Reviewers are supposed to find and detail things they do not like about the books they judge, butI am unable to find areas of neglect or errors of fact.

Insect Physiology and Biochemistry provides an excellent introduction of the subjects to the undergraduate for whom it was written and will serve as a primer for the non-specialist eager to employ insects as their research models. The text is clear, well arranged, and a pleasure to read. It presents the broad concepts and focuses on contemporary references rather than exhaustive inclusion of the contributions of the pioneering investigators of insect sciences so well documented in previous texts and monographs. In all, This textbook is an impressive works, emblematic of Nations' ability to present clearly the salient highlights of insect physiology and biochemistry. Its wide adoption as a teaching text is assured.
-William S. Bowers, The University of Arizona, Tucson, USA, Journal of Chemical Ecology, Vol. 28, No. 12, December 2002.

The book is well written, straightforward and easy to read. … For each topic, the relevant terminology is well defined and examples describing various principles are drawn from different insect taxa and illustrated in clear and concise diagrams or models. These features make reading of the book more interesting and pleasurable.

The book chapters are also organized in a logical fashion that follows the life history and physiological processes in insects. …Where descriptions are brief, references for detailed information are provided in the text. … I particularly like the author's effort to include, where appropriate under the various topics, a brief description of the practical applications of the knowledge within the context of insect pest management and control.

The principles, fundamentals and illustrative examples provided are certainly a major milestone as an update of previous textbooks on insect physiology ad biochemistry. It will be an excellent textbook for students in entomology and an invaluable reference book for scientists in various disciplines of insect science and its application.

- Baldwyn Torto, Ph.D., Center for Medical, Agricultural, and Veterinary Entomology

  • covers the core areas of psycholinguistics: language as a human attribute, language and the brain, vocabulary storage and use, language and memory, the four skills (writing, reading, listening, speaking), comprehension, language impairment and deprivation
  • draws on a range of real texts, data and examples, including a Radio Four interview, an essay written by a deaf writer, and the transcript of a therapy session addressing stuttering
  • provides classic readings by the key names in the discipline, including Jean Aitchison, Terrence Deacon, Robert Logie, Willem Levelt and Dorothy Bishop.

Churchill's Cookbook, by Georgina Landemare

“It is well to remember that the stomach governs the world.”—Winston Churchill

“Mrs. Landemare’s food is distinguished. She is an inspired intuitive cook.”—Clementine Churchill

Churchill’s Cookbook provides fascinating insight into what the legendary prime minister ate during World War II, containing over three hundred delicious recipes created by his personal cook, Georgina Landemare. The celebrity cook of her day, Landemare specialized in creating sumptuous feasts for England’s nobility. At the outbreak of the Second World War, however, she devoted her full-time services to the Churchill family, declaring “This will be my war work!” She worked for the prime minster throughout the war; she was up at dawn preparing his breakfast and remained steadfastly in the kitchen until after his last whiskey at night. On VE Night, Churchill told her that he could not have managed through the war without her.

With an introduction by Phil Reed, director of the Churchill War Rooms, Churchill’s Cookbook marks the fiftieth anniversary of Churchill’s death and the seventieth anniversary of VE Day. Covering mouth-watering cakes, biscuits, and puddings; healthy salads; and warming soups; this timely publication revives some forgotten British classics and reveals the food that sustained Churchill during his finest hours.
