Desert Storm helped heal the horrors of Vietnam, just as the one-sided Spanish American War helped unite the nation after the Civil War; or so the story goes. A review of this detailed chronology will serve to darken this picture for many users. The random deaths caused by accidents on board ships and from friendly fire and the listing of service people killed in action are part of the sobering record of this war presented by a noted military historian and author of World War II in the North Pacific: Chronology and Fact Book (Greenwood, 1994). Daily accounts follow this general plan: (a) activities of major figures, crucial events, grand strategy; (b) U.S. ground forces activity (c) U.S. naval and air force activity; (d) other coalition forces; and (e) activities of Iraq's armed forces.

The work includes a list of coalition prisoners of war, a complete list of all named or numbered military units engaged in the war, and biographical information for key U.S. and British personnel; biographical information for key figures from other countries is often limited to name, rank, and military unit. A carefully selected and constructed bibliography identifies official documents (mostly U.S.) and regimental and general historical accounts of the war. The effort made to make the glossary as complete as possible will be appreciated by users. Careful name and subject indexing makes it possible for users to locate information on total troop strength as of a certain day, tanks and aircraft destroyed, economic costs, and the death dates for individuals killed in action. Charts group statistical information. Two of three line-drawn maps show troop deployments for February 21 and 24. KEVIN DON HUTCHISON is an information specialist and lifelong student of military history. An authority on World War II in the North Pacific, Hutchison has pursued the complete history of Operation Desert Storm worldwide and continues his study of the war. A member of several military and historical associations, he has written numerous articles for military journals and magazines. His earlier book, World War II in the North Pacific: Chronology and Fact Book, was published by Greenwood Press in 1994 and has been recommended by the U.S. Commission on Military History.

KEY BOOK FOR ANY DESERT STORM COLLECTION

The amount of information included in this single volume is staggering! All of the official U.S. service histories are found here, along with all primary, and most secondary Coalition forces. The author also included as much Iraqi information as possible from Coalition intelligence services. If there is a weak area this understandably is it, with Saddam being uncooperative. Still, Iraqi Order of Battle information is surprisingly complete, along with many interesting facts including Iraqi officer biographies.
This book saved me a great deal of time and money in my research, and I cannot endorse it enough.

This book contains a wealth of information on the daily operations in the war in an easy to read/research format. It is an essential for any library and for the serious military historian.

It also contains an excellant order of battle and all the names of those who did not return.

Don't Overthink It

This book is a great read. Like this review, it is short, to the point, and explains the key concepts clearly. I for one appreciate brevity. I am a Java/web developer looking to bypass some of what I see as shortcomings of the current JavaScript language spec. I grabbed a 30-day trial copy of Webstorm, set it up for TypeScript (the integration is really good), and was able to see clearly - with the very simple examples the book provides - how TypeScript compiles to very readable JavaScript. Even if I do not end up using TypeScript, it has already taught me a few things I didn't know about JavaScript.

This probably isn't a good book for beginners. The concepts are presented assuming you already know JavaScript, object-oriented programming, etc. If, like me, you are someone who needs to develop in the JavaScript universe, but you are missing your static typing and object-oriented abstractions, TypeScript just might be your answer. And this book can get you productive quickly.

TypeScript is Microsoft extension of Javascript. So you know 80% of TypeScript already, which is the Javascript part. TypeScript adds strong compile time typing of Javascript code, which lets you add Intellisense to your code, as well as catch dumb errors. Javascript without TypeScript is like C without lint.

This book takes you through each skill that you need to learn TypeScript step by step, so you can follow along and observe TypeScript in action.

This is a short book, easy to read and follow, and you will know 99% of Typescript when you finish it.
Not bad for a thin volume.

Think twice before getting the kindle edition, poorly edited.

This review is for the kindle edition. I'm finding mistakes, especially right off the bat they mix up box 1-1 and 1-2. The reproductions of the tables that are images is horrible, and the lack of any kind of page reference makes this a pain to correlate with the teacher's outline. If you are going to charge nearly as much for the kindle book, you should put the same effort into it. I got it since I have so many books this semester I was trying to save space and weight. I shouldn't have done so.

There are NO page numbers given like some kindle textbooks. It only gives location pages, which means nothing when comparing it to class pages. A regular pdf format e textbook is much easier to work with and take notes on. It is also slow in scrolling pages.

Perfect for home producers

While Robert Runstein's "Modern Recording Techniques" continues to serve as the recording studio "bible" (as it has been through it's many iterations over the last 40 or so years), The Studio SOS Book by the editors of Sound On Sound magazine is perfectly presented for its target audience of "bedroom producers". It contains inexpensive, down-to-earth fundamentals for getting the most out of what they refer to as a "project studio", whether that be a custom-built room, a converted garage space, or merely a corner of an apartment bedroom.

They've applied their experiences of over a decade of monthly project-studio overhauls to provide a wealth of no-nonsense tips, suggestions, and techniques that work. Written in a casual yet erudite style, topics include: choosing and setting up monitor speakers (Including extremely useful info about room placement and basic acoustic treatment), soundproofing, cabling & connections, vocal recording, instrumental recording, mixing, and mastering. The book is loaded with goodies, and should be part of every "project studio's" library.

The studio SOS book is by far the most in depth for basic home recording.

I own countless books on the art of recording, but like so may of them, they go way deeper in level of recoding & mixing that I feel only pertains to big budget & production studios. For example, recording drums. So many books give instructions & advise on the assumption that they are in a huge perfect room, played on a kit costing a few thousand dollars, and recording a drummer on the same level as, let's say, Chad Smith from TRHCP...
The studio SOS book makes no assumptions at all. In fact, the book gives the best advise if someone is recording drums in the worst room, on the worst kit, and a mediocre drummer behind the kit! And my experience (as I'm sure a lot would agree) are the typical environments a lot of people if not most are stuck having to record in. If this is describing you and your environment, .... Also, Subscribe to their Magazine! Give them support!! I don't know what I would do if they ever went under.....

Greg Lukianoff is an attorney and president of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education. Fantastic book - Unfortunately for liberty

Can't say it any better than Ken at Popehat.com (awesome free speach legal blog).

In Unlearning Liberty, Greg reviews the different occasions and excuses for censorship in modern American universities, marshaling a bewildering array of case studies. Some were familiar to me: the ludicrous reaction to posters at University of Wisconsin-Stout, the legal threats to critics of the administration of Peace College, and the entirely repellent tale of Indiana University punishing a student worker for reading a book about struggles against the Klan in front of coworkers. Many others were new to me -- and I follow FIRE fairly closely. Greg has a talent for describing instances of censorship in a way to outrage me anew even if I have heard of them before. (For instance, I defy anyone to read about the University of Delaware's frankly Stalinist reeducation program for frosh without feeling disgust and contempt; Greg offers new details that led me to put the book down and go take a walk for a while.)

But this is not merely a compilation of cases. Greg traces the history of campus censorship after the "political correctness" disputes of the 1990s, and weaves the incidents of censorship together to explain how different vaguely defined ideas (like "harassment" and "disruption" and "civility") are used in an unprincipled manner as trump cards to shut people up. Moreover, Greg rather convincingly illustrates how university censorship impacts the attitudes and tolerances of students, and explains why we should fear that students taught to submit to censorship and due process violations will not be reliable supporters of free expression or due process as voting adults.

The book "UNLEARNING LIBERTY" is an insightful look into academia today and although Lukianoff points to the many administrators that have run an 'underground railroad' of sorts to funnel abused students and faculty to legal remedy... there are far too many administrators and faculty who feel that it is their right to restrict the rights of others, punish the guilty without due process and destroy the careers and lives of the innocent.

The book chronicles many of the cases of FIRE (Foundation for Individual Rights in Education) over a ten year period. Some will make you mad, some will make you cry. This book should be given to every freshman entering a college or university today... so they know what their rights are... where they can appeal if they find themselves unfairly under the administrative boot... and, most importantly, that they are not alone.

So, whether you are on the left or the right of the political spectrum, you will find this book quietly disturbing.... and a must read.

Out of the FIRE and into the light

"Unlearning Liberty" is a worthy successor to "The Shadow University: The Betrayal of Liberty on America's Campuses," written by Alan Kors and Harvey Silverglate, the co-founders of FIRE (the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education) and published in 1999. Greg Lukianoff has been President of FIRE since 2001, and most of the cases of free speech and due process violations on our college campuses that form the backbone of this lively and informative book, were referred to FIRE over the past dozen years. Since the problems of "political correctness" and the over-reaching of speech codes have been well known since "The Shadow University" and other exposés were published in the 1990s, it is very dispiriting to see that the pace at which freedoms are violated has not slackened. Lukianoff does not permit himself to be discouraged, however, and concludes the book with the hope that reforms targeted at making higher education more affordable may also fuel other reforms, including unchaining thought and speech on campus. Despite the fact that he earlier links the infringement of individual rights to the growth of the professional university administration, he does not, however, provide much hope or evidence that this is likely to happen. FIRE itself is one of the chief blocks to what seem to be an ever-increasing willingness of both campus administration and government to limit freedom in order to protect students from hurt feelings and foster civility.

The stories related here are chilling. They include, for example, an older student working his way through college found guilty of racial harassment merely for reading a book, an orientation program that literally trains its practitioners to stifle debate, several schools that have explicitly prohibited Christian groups from forming organizations thus depriving them of the rights of association while other kinds of student groups have free rein, guidelines circulated with syllabi that demand student agreement with debatable assumptions and graduate programs that expel students who dispute approved definitions of "social justice." Examples of such trends and practices are truly disturbing.

One of the most frightening trends, as Lukianoff's many narratives of rights-violations makes clear, is the creation of regulations and laws by the Department of Education and state legislatures that literally require universities to violate the individual rights of their students (e.g., the "Dear Colleagues" letter issued by the DOE in 2011 requires a reduced standard of evidence to convict a student of harassment, including sexual assault). Lukianoff even explains how a recent Supreme Court decision misconstrues the first amendment. The law of the land is itself moving away from protecting our liberty, an evolution this book interestingly links to the flagging attention to vigorous debate and critical thinking fostered on campuses where students and faculty alike are increasingly afraid of expressing themselves bluntly and clearly. We are in danger of failing to educate the next generation of citizens to value central freedoms.

My only criticism of this important and fluidly written book is its organization. Each chapter opens from the perspective of a fictional student first learning about, then applying to, finally being admitted to and attending a fictional college campus. The anecdotes and interests of the chapters follow those of this hypothetical young student, from censorship in high schools to hypocrisy in college publicity and admission to the excesses of orientation programs and infringement of freedom of association on campus. I found this structure confusing and would have preferred that the powerful evidence supplied by this book had been organized by a more rigorous topical method--e.g., a chapter on speech codes, followed by a chapter on the rise of the therapeutic approach to student life, followed by a chapter on due process, freedom of association and so forth. I also thought that the fictionalizing thought experiment that governs the book's structure blunts the brute reality of the true stories that it tells. But if Lukianoff's student-centered approach attracts more young readers, the loss of clarity will be worth the expansion of readership.

About the Author

DANNY HANDKE makes the magic at Walt Disney Imagineering as an Associate Show Producer for the Tokyo Disney Resort, Disney Cruise Line, and Hong Kong Disneyland portfolios. His creative talents have been utilized on many exciting projects and attractions worldwide, including Goofy's Paint n' Play House and Monsters, Inc. Ride & Go Seek! at Tokyo Disneyland; Mickey & Friends' Greeting Trails and Village Greeting Place at Tokyo DisneySea; Goofy Golf on the Disney Dream; AquaLab on the Disney Fantasy; and numerous other attractions unannounced at this time. He also designed an attraction poster for Mr. Toad's Wild Ride that is currently being showcased in Disneyland Park.

VANESSA HUNT is a Disney Imagineer and a lifelong Disney aficionado. Her education is in art history, and she is part of the group responsible for the more than 100,000 pieces of original artwork preserved in the Art Library at Walt Disney Imagineering. She has been curator of several Imagineering exhibits featuring the works of many of the Imagineering legends, and she has consulted for The Walt Disney Family Museum. Vanessa has also contributed her skills as a researcher of Disney and California history to the Disney California Adventure Buena Vista Street team.

Super look at Disney history

If you love the parks and are nostalgic for the days when Disney's mid-century graphic artists were some of the best in the world, you will enjoy this book. I only gave it four stars, however, because:

- There are no artist bios at all! Not ONE single page devoted to Bjorn Aaronson or Sam McKim? Heck, there isn't even a picture of an artist in the whole book. Why? This is a shocking omission I hope the authors remedy for future editions, because without insight into the creators, you gain no real understanding of the artistic process.

- It needs more concept art and fewer modern posters. Again, the concept art gives you a window into the process and teases the reader with "what could have been." I know the Disney vaults contain thousands of these preliminary sketches, so why not include at least one example with every iconic poster? I would much see see more examples of this than some of the poorly drawn Toyko DisneySea posters (what were they thinking with the Mermaid Lagoon Theater poster?).

In all, a good book to help you retain that Disney feeling, but one which falls short of its true potential.

Loved it but many of my favorite posters were not given the full page treatment.
Binding and printing are top notch. The colors look beautiful.

Great big book, all about posters

Just wanted to say that I thought this was a great book. Now two things you should keep in mind, when I ordered it off Amazon, it didn't come wrapped in plastic or anything. So when it came, there were some little nicks and scrapes on the dust jacket. Nothing too bad, or enough to make me return it. But you should be aware of that. Also, most of the art inside is for Magic Kingdom only. I guess they just don't make a lot of posters for the other parks; Epcot, AK, DHS. Would rate it a 3.5 overall. Definitely worth it if you get it cheaper then the cover price of $40.
