Cohen's goals and achievements are noted as well as his success in music and poetry. The author includes interviews from the people who were closest to Cohen from the start of his career, following his accomplishments. This insightful, brilliant story reflects on his dreams, his motivation, and his persistence to perform well. Simmons tracks his footsteps from the young man who just started his life to one of the most important artists in the world. An inspiring and enjoyable portrait of a famous artist that grabs the reader's attention in the first chapter. Highly Recommended to music and poetry lovers!

A definitive Cohen biography

Recent years have seen a number of attempts to produce Cohen biographies for an intelligent reading public, to follow up Ira Nadel's excellent but necessarily incomplete work of almost two decades ago. This one succeeds definitively. Simmons has done it with restrained, professional writing, deep research, and access to key players including Cohen himself. Some of the details are well known at this point, but even those are intriguing in the re-telling. A fresh perspective and a mature pen--not to mention the engaging narrative of the life of a beloved, humanly flawed, immensely appealing protagonist--make this the Cohen biography we have been waiting for.

Simply put, the finest biography of Leonard Cohen ever writ. Simmons (no relation to moi) covers the waterfront, spending equal time on Cohen's music and literary work, as well as the chronology of his life. The personal anecdotes are numerous and revealing, from teenaged Leonard hypnotizing the clothes off the family maid, to jamming on "Suzanne" with Jimi Hendrix, to his many love affairs. The writing is smart, sharp, funny. By book's end, I was left wanting more.

The historical notes are surprisingly knowledgeable in most areas, though some notes concerning the British Raj period are either tritely anti-colonial or of dubious veracity, sometimes both. The Paksitani bureaucracy is a much more flexible entity than the authors would suggest, and things like Foreigner's Registration and exit taxes are not necessarily carved in stone. In conclusion, this guide definitely caters to the trek-minded eco-groover, with disproportionate emphasis laid on the Northern Areas, and on repeating tired environmentalist mantras.

An Essential Pakistan Guide!

After using this Lonely Planet Pakistan & the Karakoram Highway 7th edition during my recent 6 week trip to Pakistan I must say that this book is an essential guide for sure. I traveled all along the Karakoram Highway from Kashgar (China) down to Islamabad. From Islamabad I continued to explore the rest of this fascinating country to the southern city of Karachi. If you are planning a visit to Pakistan you simply must have this book. My only criticism is that the map inset of the Karakoram Highway contains serious errors such as placing Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan along the Karakoram Highway region. Lonely Planet should correct these errors as soon as possible so travelers don't think they can cross into Pakistan from those two countries through which I also traveled in 2008.

Thank you to C.C Genovese for writing another amazing book for his readers to read.

This is totally different from all his other books. He has combined both his passions horror and erotica and it works extremely well. From the first page till the last I was enthralled with the concept of the whole book. These to passions work well side by side, I am looking forward to reading more of these type of stories from him. His writing is so unique, the characters have you sitting on the edge of your seat waiting for what happens next in their story.

The story is hot and steamy with the twist of evilness and horror, the whole story just explodes and leaves you wanting more. It gives you such a high that you feel part of the characters.

I would highly recommend this book to anybody people go buy it I promise you will not be disappointed. Enjoy.

Even though this is a novella it is sooo good. It has horror, some humor, sexiness, along with great writing.I could actually feel myself getting tense not knowing what was going to happen and the sex scene was awesome. Very hot.Therefore warranting a five star from me.

Very entertaining Roman thriller

The second in this new Roman series sits within a pretty crowded market and some very well-known authors. I enjoyed the first book and this follow up is just as good.

Young and slightly naive Cassius Corbulo is an Imperial agent, not by choice, more by circumstance. He is smart but no great sword fighter and in many situations lacks confidence or gravitas which does make a refreshing change. In this book he continues to be aided by his servant Sumo (and again the author avoids the trap of them treating each-other as equals) and a taciturn ex Gladiator who is along as a bodyguard. The three of them are on the trail of some stolen treasure and an Imperial Banner that must be recovered.

So we share the adventures of our trio as they doggedly follow the trail of theft, murder and treachery.

It works on a number of levels as the characters have depth and, especially in the case of Cassius, have their flaws that they manage through. In addition the dynamics between the main three characters is always entertaining and this helpd make this a fun and entertaining romp.

Not what I expected, but a great read!

They say not to judge a book by its cover. This is not a sword and glory novel, it is more along the lines of espionage or mystery and it really works well. In this second of the series we see the main protagonist Cassius fleshed out and while not exactly James Bond of the Legionary set, it still had me engrossed throughout. Brown also introduces another character, the bodyguard former gladiator who works well in the tale. The ancient city of Antioch is brought to life and could almost be considered a main character too as it is richly woven into the second half of the book. Overall an enjoyable, comfortable way to spend some hours being transported back in time... Can't wait to dive into the next in the series, The Far Shore, as soon as I click Send!

A new Roman series that's thoroughly entertaining

This exciting new series stands-out within a highly competitive, crowded genre alongside authors such as Bernard Cornwell, Simon Scarrow and Conn Iggulden to name but a few. Unlike the merciless warrior `hero' figure of Cassius in the majority of fiction, here the author portrays this icon in a new light and altogether different angle. The slant taken on the Roman fighter is one of secret service as a spy; an entirely original concept that's unexpected and intriguing. This detective type story takes you on a thrilling adventure with epic battles and treasure hunts, reminiscent of "The Eagle" versus a contemporary crime saga! Full of twists & turns in the plot, shocking secrets and unforeseen unfolding events...I can predict this series becoming something of a sensation.

It's ultimately the characters that make this gripping tale so fascinating to read and colourful - from Cassius' servant Simo, his bodyguard Indavara and the ex-gladiator. This tantalizing trio on the trail for the Imperial banner were full of depth, and I loved their interaction amongst themselves throughout the book. Murder and treachery within an authentic, atmospheric setting makes this historical novel a winner in my mind and a sure-fire success as a sequel! Although this is part of a series it is also a book that likewise can be read as a `stand alone' novel.

Book 2 in the Agent of Rome series is a spectacular story and one that I would highly recommend to fans of this genre, as something new and highly imaginative. Rich backdrops and likeable characters make this unusual tale something truly unforgettable. I am so pleased to have won a copy of Nick Brown's book {through a GoodReads, first-read giveaway} and I look forward to reading and discovering more of his work.
