About the Author

Michael Kroes is an aviation practitioner and educator and has more than 35 years of experience in the field. He holds or has held several FAA certifications, including an Airframe & Powerplant Certificate, Inspection Authorization, Designated Mechanic Examiner, Designated Engineering Authority, and a Commercial Pilot's License. Professor Kroes has worked for some of the top aviation companies, including Raytheon and Allied Signal, and spent 25 years as a professor and Department Head at Purdue University. Recognized as a leading expert on FAA technician certification, he authored a comprehensive study funded by the FAA. This study was used to develop new FAA technician certification content and guidelines.

Michael S. Nolan is a professor at Purdue University and has taught there since 1978. He was responsible for the development of new A.S. and B.S. degree programs that now provide educational opportunities for students seeking to study aviation management and air traffic control. This program became one of only thirteen degree granting programs in the United States approved by the FAA as a Collegiate Training Initiative program for air traffic controllers.

The Development of modern Optimal and robust control theory in the last thirty years calls for significant change in the teaching of classic control. It is the authors’ goal to integrate the modern optimal and robust control theory into classical control theory using tools already available from the context of classic control. This book represents the authors’ first attempt towards this challenging goal. About the Author

Prof. Li Qiu received the B.Eng degree from Hunan University, Changsha, Hunan, China, in 1981. He received the M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Toronto, Toronto, Ont., Canada, in 1987 and 1990, respectively. He joined Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong SAR, China, in 1993, where he is now a professor of Electronic and Computer Engineering. Prof. Qiu's research interests include system, control, information theory, and mathematics for information technology. He served as an associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control and an associate editor of Automatica. He is now a Distinguished Lecturer of IEEE Control Systems Society and the general chair of the 7th Asian Control Conference, which is to be held in Hong Kong in 2009. He is a fellow of IEEE.

 

Prof. Kemin Zhou was born in Wuhu, China, in 1962. He received B.S. degree from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 1982, M.S.E.E. and Ph.D. degrees from University of Minnesota in 1986 and 1988, respectively. Since 1990, he has been with Louisiana State University where he is currently Mark and Carolyn C. Guidry Distinguished Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering. He is the leading author of two books in the field: Robust and Optimal Control (Prentice Hall, 1995), which has been used worldwide as graduate textbook and research references and has been translated into Japanese (1997) and Chinese (2002), and Essentials of Robust Control (Prentice Hall, 1997). He is/was an Associate Editor of Automatica, IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization, Systems and Control Letters, Journal of System Sciences and Complexity, and Journal of Control Theory and Applications. He was named the Oskar R. Menton Endowed Professor in 1998 and Voorhies Distinguished Professor in 2004, recognized for outstanding accomplishments and contributions to LSU by the House of Representatives of the Louisiana Legislature in 2004, and received outstanding young investigator award from Natural Science Foundation of China in 2004. He was also selected in 2004 as the prestigious Chang Jiang Jiang Zuo Professor. He has also been honored as one of LSU 2008 Rainmakers. He was elected IEEE Fellow in 2003.

An Introductory designed for the research level study

The book is written in 8 years by two authorative researchers in the field of optimal control theory. Although intended as an introductory, this textbook is mathematically sophisticated and self-contained, sometimes reaching to advanced topics. However, I consider it an important feature favoring readers with no engineering control background*.

That being said, the book still provides within 400 or so pages lots of examples along with matlab codes which helps you to create a more intutive understanding of key concepts. You will appreciate the appropriateness in the choice of engineering examples and information provided. Another great feature of the book is that it provides a great up-to-date references to important articles and books which, in an ideal situation, should be read to improve the learning process. So this is a fivestar textbook which deserves to be read from page one to last.

(*In my personal view, the way people learn control theory (or anything else) is a process of creating a simulation in their minds rather than on a computer. The more sophisticated mind is simply capable of handling more complex simulation...If you have lots of engineering experience, you have certainly seen how a control system actually works. Then you should have no problem creating a visual simulation in your mind. For those who has no engineering control background, mathematical simulation is the second best choice...Its safe to say most theoretical researchers in this field are more or less creating all sorts of simulations in their minds everyday, hoping that some of them will actually find an application...)

Drug addiction is something I have a hard time understanding and wrapping my head around. This book taps into the minds of lonely, broken souls that find solace in drugs and imagination. I would have loved for this book to be in an audiobook version because of the writing style. Never the less it is a great read that reveals the reality of drug addiction. It’s definitely a twisted book from the start to the end and does not finish with a happy ending for the main characters.

“I think that’s one of the problems with the world today nobody knows who they are. Everyone is running around looking for an identity, or trying to borrow one, only they don’t know it.”

I had seen the movie and although I enjoyed it very much I think the book was much better. The use of unusual punctuation and the differences in the language and cadence by character really added to the experience.

lots of great quotes, brilliant material

This could have been a superb biography of Reed. Access to friends and enemies, lots of great quotes, brilliant material. But overall, disappointing. The writing was a little clunky, but the main objection I had was Sounes' overtly judgemental voice. I came away from this book thinking: "you really didn't like him". I would expect some opinion, of course, but a more objective view from a biographer. Let the interviews speak for themselves. Use the material to portray a complex and, yes, difficult and sometimes (arguably) nasty person, whose creativity, talent and output made him more than a bad-tempered speed freak from Long Island. This could have been a thoughtful exploration of the creative demons, but it fell short. And the superficial dismissal of Laurie Anderson as the girlfriend, then wife? An unfair portrayal of an important artist in her own right.

Get to know the man who made the music

This book is both outstanding and not enough, what do I mean by that? This book will introduce you to almost all aspects of the life of Lou Reed as a man. Whom he loved, the way he was, the drugs he took. It will provide you with a great understanding of what happened where to whom and more or less why. So if you are curious to learn more about the man, this is a great book which is engaging and witty. However, it lacks any serious discussion of the music of Lou Reed. So it's a little like reading a biography of Lucian Frieud which almost doesn't deal with his paintings. I don't know why that is but this should not be a reason not to buy and read the book. If you love the music, you already know why you love the music. This is just to know the man who made it.

About the Author
Award winning British author Saskia Walker first dreamed of writing her own stories when she discovered a handful of romance novels stashed away in her school library. An avid reader, she lapped up the fun, the adventures, and the life-affirming emotion of these stories, but always felt dismay when the bedroom door closed the reader out. She vowed that if she ever had the chance to pursue her dream, all the passion would be right there on the page.

Saskia finally began writing seriously in the late 1990s. By that time she'd traveled the world, got herself a BA in Art History, a Masters in Literature and the Visual Arts, and she'd worked in all manner of diverse careers—but the stories in her head simply had to be written.

Her first erotic short story was signed in '97 and since then she has had several single title novel and novella publications, and her work has appeared in over fifty anthologies including Best Women’s Erotica, The Mammoth Book of Best New Erotica, and the Black lace Wicked Words series. Just as Good as the First Book!

This is the second of 3 books. I loved the first book and this one was just as good! I liked the thread that connected the 3 books, 3 close sisters with different psychic abilities. The way Holly's abilty manifests in this story is pretty far out on the credibility continuum but sets the premise for the book. If you're looking for hard reality, you're probably not reading books with psychic characters! This author is fast becoming one of my favorites. The relationships flow so gracefully yet are plenty hot and explicit. The menage relationship as well as the man on man scenes seem believable and sweet. Stewart and Joshua are totally lovable and Holly is lucky to have found them! Note: book 3 is great, too!
