A Disappointing Companion to Just Me and My Dad

My little brother (now in his 30s) grew up to Mercer Mayer's Just Me and My Dad and Just For You. I bought those last year for our then-one-year-olds and was delighted that they were just as wonderful as I remembered. I ordered Just Me and My Mom recently and I'm so disappointed with the content. Unlike Just Me and My Dad, which has a sweet and happy story line, this book is just about Little Critter doing things he's not supposed to and people getting mad.

And, call me a feminist if you will, but I felt slighted by this book's treatment of the mom. Just Me and My Dad is all about an awesome camping trip little critter goes on with his dad, while Just Me and My Mom is all about this poor kid getting dragged to a bunch of boring museums where he's not allowed to touch things (and one with a bunch of lame pictures), and then a dress store with his mom. In fact, my husband was reading it to the kids the other night and I heard him flipping back through the pages, muttering to himself, "When was this WRITTEN?"

Shockingly, 1990. Feels more like the 1950s. And not that sexy John Hamm sort of way.

Fun read for kids and adults alike!

I loved the Little Critter books when I was growing up, and this is the first book I bought to read to my infant daughter. I get wonderfully nostalgic reading it to her and talking about how my mom used to read these books to me. Colorful pictures make it fun for even babies to look at. There's a lot of fun in them for adults as well, the looks on the mom's face is priceless! I didn't catch her exhaustion and frustration when I was a kid.

However, this fledgling field experienced a boom only in recent times, following the development of powerful non-invasive techniques for probing the neural circuitry supporting the complex cognitive functions of the human brain. Although sophisticated mathematical models and phy- cal theories are the basic tools behind the conceptual foundations and a- lytical implementation of these modem techniques, to the best of our knowledge no effort was made to formalize the actual knowledge about brain function into a coherent theoretical framework incorporating the - cent developments in mathematical and physical science. Addressing this lack was our first motivation in writing this book.

Who would guess that reading books could prompt a constitutional crisis? A charming novella

I was surprised and charmed by Alan Bennett's THE UNCOMMON READER, so much so that I have read it several times and have recommended it to many friends, especially those who love British writers.

I know that in the UK, this book is regarded as an anti-monarchist satire, and perhaps that is exactly how Mr. Bennett indeed intended it. However, whether or not he meant for it to happen, I couldn't help feeling that the author has a secret fondness for his main character, who is the Queen herself. She comes off as far more sympathetic than not, and the reader will be irresistibly drawn into HM's private life. Mr, Bennett's fly-on-the-wall observations are hilarious and poignant.

This is a wonderful story, economically told, and I was sorry to reach the last page because I could have gone on reading it for ages. Don't miss THE UNCOMMON READER; it is a keeper.

Found it fascinating -- until............

Now, folks, I'm no prude! I've run high schools and colleges so NOTHING phases me.
I was pre-reading this novella thinking it'd be an interesting gift for my cousin.....until "eventually Sir Kevin got a call from the special advisor," who apparently didn't like the Queen recommending books to his prime minister. Explaining there are some things he does like........and here he refers to oral sex.......totally out of context AND he doesn't use clinical words to point that out; he describes exactly what he likes.

Purpose in the book?
Shock value?
Characterize the special advisor?
Stress differences in the social classes?
I have no idea - but I do know I'm not ordering new copies to gift to my cousin, my Anglophile friend, or anyone else I know. How sad to have been left with that lasting impression and have the totality of the book shrunken behind that unfortunate exchange........

To Read or not to Read

Everyone who reads on a regular basis knows about the addictive features of such an adventure. As the author leads us to believe the Queen of England simply lacked the time for such things until one day while chasing down her disruptive and incorrigible Corgi's she encounters a young man in the book mobile. Norman as it turns out is employed in the Royal kitchens but is a bookophile. In the coming months he guides the Monarchial pursuit of all things written including his apparent penchant for gay authors. Even after Norman's untimely disappearance her Majesty begins to redefine her challenge to consume as many books as is literally possible. In doing so she finds herself ignoring or at least giving short shrift to her official duties which despite her love of all things regal has started to find them if not boring at least disruptive of her new found regime.

The problem with excessive reading as any ignored spouse or best friend can tell you is that reading is a decidedly singular excursion with the annoying exception of the occasional "Listen to this..." followed by an extracontextual paragraph or so which the listener does not want to hear. The cure of course for reading to exclusion is to write. Will this be the remedy for the good Queen or will she resort to something more drastic? Her attendants and personal handlers conspire to find the solution but of course she takes the bull, as it were, by the horns and preempts them with her usual decisiveness on the burm of her 80th birthday.

A lovely fast read. Alan Bennett is a cheeky Brit with a rather large repertoire to his credit including plays, essays, novels, reviews and the odd appearance on stage. 2.50 GIBO

FINALLY - A great book about real BD!

This book is about business development - not sales. Far too many people confuse the two. As the author explains early in the book, "BD is the polar opposite of sales." If you want to learn how to become a better salesperson, how to close that big account, how to increase your commission check, etc., then go read Strategic Selling or Spin Selling or one of the ridiculous number of books on sales. But if you want to learn how to create and develop deep strategic partnerships that can utterly transform your company, then you need to read the Sumo Advantage.

As an early-stage entrepreneur, I've struggled personally with how to build initial momentum and credibility in the marketplace. How do you break into costly and competitive marketing channels when you have no scale? How do you get customers to buy from a company they've never heard of? Why should anyone pay attention to you?

In the Sumo Advantage, Brenner explains that one highly effective approach is to establish partnerships with big companies that have already solved those problems. Fortune 1000 companies are already in those marketing channels and already have relationships with all the customers you are trying to reach. So instead of trying to brute-force your way into a market where you're woefully out-manned, you can co-opt the strengths of those bigger businesses and make them yours.

Importantly, though, this only works if you bring equal value to the Fortune 1000 company. Brenner explains in detail how to identify potential partners, sell them on your strategic vision, negotiate the deal, and - most importantly - nourish and develop the relationship over time, so that it becomes a powerful contributor to your business.

If you're an entrepreneur, you owe it to yourself to read this book. It's quick, compelling, and immediately actionable - and it will make you think about your business strategy in an entirely new light.

Although emphasis is on explorers and climbers, this is not exclusively a mountaineering book. Early chapters deal with geology, history, and inhabitants of this vast region. Cameron traces British exploration, which began about the end of the 18th century triggered by the East India Company, and follows climbers from late 19th century to the present. Quotes from the writings of these hardy visitors make up a considerable part of later chapters, and one can dip into the book almost anywhere and become immersed in their vicissitudes and triumphs. Great Historic Overview

This books gives a great overview of Himalayan exploration, cultural aspects, and an understanding of the tribes of the region. Reading about explorers being thrown into a pit of tigers amongst other weirdness is quite entertaining. A nice selection of historic photos also accompanies the text. Recommended if you have a library of books on this region. I bought this book over 20 years ago and would never loan it out to anybody.

It IS categorized under "Historical Fiction"

You know, I do agree with the rest of the reviewers that this book is flawed in historical accuracy, in more ways than one. However, this is classified as historical fiction, therefore, I do not expect every detail to be perfect.

Rather, I wish that they could appreciate this book for its literary value. Caldwell does a wonderful job of writing in a coherent way that most should appreciate (since that can be rare, nowadays!), and learn from. She wrote her interpretaion of Cicero's life, and the city in which he lived.

By all means, do not stop learning your Roman history here! Read from different authors about different people. Is that not the beauty of our world? To enrich our minds with many sources, so as to draw our own conclusion?

I admit, I loved this book. It was an exciting and interesting read, about one of the most well known men Rome had ever seen. Try also reading "The Flames of Rome" by Paul Maier, or "The Roman Way" by Edith Hamilton. Those can give one a broader view of Roman society!

Pompous, historically incorrect, and poorly written.

I did not care much for this book. In fact, there is a lot not to like about it. First of all, the novel is historically inaccurate in so many ways that one does not know where to begin. Cicero was not a worshipper of Jehova (the Jewish/Christian/Islamic God) as this book would make it seem. In point of fact, this book makes a conscious effort to make Cicero seem more "American." It does so at the cost of both historical accuracy and pleasure of reading. In my opinion, the best books about Rome are those that make Rome seem, well, Roman. This one fails. Except for the togas, the Roman Senate in this book could be the one in Washington DC.
The book makes other pompous analogies between Rome and the United States. I found none of them to be insightful. The writing here, by the way, is at about an eighth grade level. This one might be OK as a novel to get children interested in Roman history; a worthwhile goal. But this novel is not itself a good source of Roman history and the discriminating reader will pass it by. Try McCullough's "Masters of Rome" series (novels) or Tom Holland's superb "Rubicon" for an analysis of late Republican Rome.

A very worthwhile time spent reading this most marvelous book

I originally read this book back in the earl 1960's. At the time the US was experiencing the watt's riot. Berkley and all kinds of disorder. This book is really about the fall of the Roman Empire with Ceasar and Ciceiro. At the time I thought oh my Goodness this is what is happening now. Recently it came to my mind and I purchased a used copy of the Pillar of Iron. It is a very awakening experience to read history repeating itself. It could be about todays US world. Time well spent to read this book. Amazon has access to many of the old used good works and the price is very reasonable.

Forensic Chiropractor review

Recently my colleague, Dr. Anthony Sirucek, made me aware of a new publication by the American Medical Association entitled, “Guides to the Evaluation of Disease and Injury Causation”. This is a just released (copyright 2014) 2nd edition of the book first published in 1985. The manuscript’s opening line sets the stage for the purpose of the book. “Determining causation is a critical issue in occupational health, yet its definition remains elusive. Why? The causation concept may have a different meaning to various parties”. In the Introduction section it goes on to say, “In occupational health, causation has become key, since determination of causation is the gatekeeper to treatment and to determination of who is financially responsible”.
Although the volume is focused primarily on occupational exposure and injury, the same conclusions can be reached when substituting “personal injury” with “occupational injury”. The “Guides” introduction states, “It is incumbent on clinicians to give an opinion based on a careful review of three critical pieces of information:
1. Individual clinical findings
2. Individual workplace exposures
3. The literature linking (or not linking) the exposure of concern and the conditions in question”.

In the first three chapters, definitions of cost, fraud, risk, aggravation, exacerbation, recurrence, impairment evaluation, and apportionment are discussed. Concepts such as cause in fact, proximate cause, epistemology, specificity, sensitivity, positive predictive value and other research and statistical terms are quickly but efficiently reviewed with illustrative examples. These are all important in reaching conclusions needed to establish causation. A chart is included listing the Federal and individual States “causation threshold” such as reasonable medical judgment, within a reasonable degree of medical probability, preponderance of the evidence and more probable than not. Each state is listed and relevant court cases that resulted in the state standards are listed and discussed.
A recurrent theme throughout the beginning of the book is the topic of “assuring fairness when scientific opinions are involved”. It asks the question for all who are involved in medical legal matters to consider; what is occurring when the analysis of the facts results in differing opinions between the experts? At this point we have to presume bias exists in the expert conclusions. This topic precludes an insightful review of the Frye rule and Daubert rule regarding admissibility of evidence. This brief historical review of these rulings is worth the price of admission for the book all by itself.
Chapter 4 is dedicated to Methodology discussing topics of study design, outcomes from literature search, strength of evidence definitions and how to score epidemiologic studies on the strength of evidence. This presents a helpful tool in reviewing studies offered as evidence.
Chapter 5 is dedicated to Apportionment. It is defined in the 4th edition of the Guides to Evaluation of Permanent Impairment as “an estimate of the degree to which each of various occupational or non occupational factors may have caused or contributed to a particular impairment”. The 6th edition “Guides” more comprehensive definition of apportionment is offered as “the extent to which each of 2 or more probable causes are found responsible for an effect (injury, disease, impairment, etc.). Only probable causes (at least more probable than not) are included.” Apportionment of treatment, disability, impairment and co-founders in apportionment are discussed.
An example of how apportionment plays a role in injury cases is illuminated on page 412 as, “Apportionment is also a frequent issue in personal injury. For example, while driving home from the chiropractor’s office after receiving adjustments for neck and upper back pain, a person is rear-ended. Due to increased discomfort in the same areas, the driver reportedly now cannot work and needs more frequent treatments”.
Chapter 6 is focused on the “Causality Examination”. The goal of this exam is described as:
1. To determine and confirm that the original diagnosis was correct and due to the claimed injury, event or exposure.
2. Verify that current symptoms, physical examination findings, and test results are consistent with the diagnosis or a complication of previous treatment.
3. Determine and consider that an individual’s current complaints and findings may have been influenced by illness behavior.

Significant space is given to the complete examination topics of past history, the examinee interview, symptom diagram, behavioral signs, pseudo neurological signs, orthopedic and neurological tests, and patient observations. All of these are evaluated for consistency or inconsistency regarding the condition.

The work goes on to discuss Report Writing in Chapter 7. The three basic elements in an injury claim that must be proven are liability, damages and causation. Causation is the element that links the liability and the damages. Outlines of report formats are offered for review.
A large portion of this publication, 407 pages of the total 792, is dedicated to elaborating epidemiological risk factors for various body regions and conditions in separate chapters 8 through 21 including the spine, upper limb, lower limb, musculoskeletal disorders, acute and chronic pain, cardiovascular problems, pulmonary problems, neurological disorders, rheumatologic disorders, mental illness, genitourinary system, gastrointestinal system, EENT, and special topics of occupational exposure and chemical exposure.
The 22nd chapter entitled “Putting It All Together” is useful at this point in the book. The chapter opens with, “After reading this book, how does a health care provider put the whole process together and develop an answer to the question of causation? Educators suggest that examples provide one of the best ways to learn new skill. To that end, the following examples are presented.” These examples are insightful and helpful.
The rest of the publication discusses causation for the various perspectives of the Attorney, the Judge, the Employer, the Insurer, the Workers' Compensation Commission and the Occupational Physician. This 360 degree review is enlightening and highlights areas of bias.
Of particular interest for the physician will be the chapter detailing “Causation: The Occupational Physician’s Perspective”. This chapter outlines the many hurdles and considerations a doctor must take when determining the etiology of an injury or symptoms that may be related to a person’s workplace, environment or tasks. While this is often an occupational or “company” physician, the authors note the importance that any first-line provider, be it a family doctor or emergency room physician, should be wary of haphazardly labeling a condition as work related. The book explains this is because it takes a very comprehensive analysis of components which cannot be adequately addressed in the typical clinical setting in order to determine the extent of causality in relation to the work place. There are several insightful case studies of individuals with seemingly work trauma related symptoms and injuries that, after proper forensic examination, are determined to have conditions separate and distinct from the common scapegoats such as workplace activities or degenerative changes. The chapter goes on to outline the nine categories in the widely utilized Bradford - Hill Criteria. While this remains the accepted structure for determining causation, the authors gives several insights as to why and how the physician should use, but not depend on, these criteria.
We found this publication to cover a vast array of topics studied and utilized by the forensic physician integrated into a single reference volume. It gives great guidance in helping the physician be the “interpreter of the evidence of his or her specialty to the trier of fact”. It should be on the bookshelf, or more importantly the desk top of every forensic examiner seeking the truth. As chiropractic physicians working in the medico legal arena, we highly recommend this instructional publication.

Orianna Fallaci is a Gem!!!

If you have not read an interview by Orianna Fallaci, then this book, Interview with History, is a must read. Not only is she well versed in history and politics, she has an irreverent, poignant, disciplined yet adventurous approach to interviewing some of the world's most powerful personalities in the early 1970's. Somehow she manages to elicit comments that are candid and revealing in ways the interviewees never anticipated, and which for the reader--and Ms. Fallaci--are fresh and welcome in our age of celebrity and superficial journalism. Ms. Fallaci's background perspective in each interview, her insites, her perspective, offer the reader a sharp, insightful mind that challenges our thinking...in the best possible way.

This is one of the best collection of interviews I've read, and show us how journalism can and should be. Spin politicians and businesspeople, beware...you won't like Ms. Fallaci's approach and assessments. But for those of us who are tired of cant and empty rhetoric, her interviews are a glimpse into how we should all approach politicians and celebrities: with sceptism, with intelligence, with principle. It's a great, highly recommended read...I only wish she could continue interviewing--and exposing--the foibles and attitudes of those the media annoints as worthy.

This is a particularly relevant book, the parallels with current world affairs fascinating. The interviews, with the benefit of hindsight, clarify what went wrong (and right) during some of the most significant conflicts in modern history; but more than anything, they provide a view of the critical leadership that, in most cases, was founded from the most honorable intentions, regardless the side they represented.
