Q & A With Dr. Samir Desai


In 2013, you wrote the book Medical School Interview: Winning Strategies from Admissions Faculty. Why did you decide to now write this new book?
 

The book we wrote in 2013 had an overview of the MMI process.  At the time of that book's publication, only 10 or so U.S. medical schools had adopted the MMI as an admissions interview tool. Since then, the popularity of the MMI has exploded in the U.S., and we now have over 30 allopathic medical schools utilizing this relatively new interview format. Of course, in Canada where the MMI was developed, it continues to be the interview format of choice at most schools. It was clear to me that we needed a detailed resource to help applicants prepare for the MMI.
 


Was there anything else that motivated you to write this book?
 

I have received a number of emails from applicants/parents across the country, expressing concern about the MMI. How should I prepare for the MMI? What are raters/interviewers looking for? What are common mistakes? These were just a few of the questions I received, and there seemed to be a relative lack of resources and guidance for MMI preparation.
 
Particularly distressing to me were the heartbreaking stories some applicants shared with me. In some cases, applicants had only a single MMI interview, and everything hinged on their MMI performance. Sadly, things didn't work out, and that bothered me because I really felt that these applicants had the potential to make some important contributions to our profession. So this was another driving force for me to write this book - my desire to help worthy applicants rise to the occasion so that schools do not overlook or reject them.
 

Is this book only for medical school applicants?
 

Not at all. It's written to empower all students preparing for the MMI. It doesn't matter if you're a medical school, pharmacy school, vet school, or dental school applicant. You'll find the detailed advice, strategies for success, and sample MMI scenarios with explanations incredibly useful.
 

Is this book only for U.S. students?
 

Canadian medical students will find that there is a section in the book devoted to Canadian medical schools. No matter where you are in the world, however, I am confident that this book will meet your needs.

Are there any applicants that may be at a disadvantage?


The MMI is difficult, and therefore I recommend that every applicant put forth the necessary time and effort. However, research has shown that the MMI process may favor extroverts. This is of obvious concern for introverted applicants but my experience has shown that introverted applicants can do well with the proper preparation. We address some of this in the book.


What else would you like to tell applicants?

If you've received an interview, I would like to congratulate you. With the intense competition for spots, it's an honor to receive an interview invitation. Now with this invitation in hand, there's still a lot of work to be done. Although the MMI is challenging, it's not insurmountable, and you can do well. This book will give you an insider's perspective based on available research done on the MMI and the viewpoints of dozens of admissions officials. I'm applying to veterinary schools and as there are no books pertaining specifically to vet med, I bought this book. It has been super helpful in laying out how to approach questions. The scenarios provided are great, even though they pertain to medical issues. Would highly recommend!

Pretty good book but parts of it can be pretty ...

Pretty good book but parts of it can be pretty repetitive. There are parts where the answers sound a bit awkward if stated out loud - the introduction part of "do you think I have a good understanding of the prompt". In my MMIs I found it better to lay out the issues and discuss them rather than start with this.

Definitely a must read for anyone trying to get into medical school. The days of GPA and MCAT scores being the major determinant in one's acceptance to medical school are past. Admissions boards are looking at the complete individual. They've adopted interview techniques to get at the heart of the person. Dr. Desai helps one develop a plan to approach this paradigm shift with his distinctive and entertaining writing style. Being part of an admissions committee at other levels, he has true insider knowledge. If you don't read this, you are at a disadvantage relative to your peers.

Invaluable Resource for Practicing Meditation with Children

Having dealt with high anxiety for much of my life, I have been overjoyed to find that meditation helps me to feel safe and calm, and to think clearly to distinguish between imagined threats and real threats. It has allowed me to open myself up to new experiences and to let go of the idea that if I can't be perfect, I shouldn't bother to try. My oldest son has demonstrated similar qualities since he was a toddler - he has been more than a little hesitant to try new things and slow to make friends. Like any good mom, I turned to the internet for help ;) I was lucky to find Lorraine's first book, Calm Kids. I loved the book so much that I decided to sign up for her course to teach meditation to children. Calm Kids is a great resource, but Lorraine's latest book, Connected Kids goes so much deeper. It is an invaluable resource for various types of meditation, how to use various tools like mudras, mandalas, and labyrinths, and why they are helpful. It also includes medical research and the proven the benefits of meditation for everyone - not just those with special needs. This book truly is wonderful for the general population, but Lorraine's detailed work on challenges that people with autism face and several specific balancing mindful activities make this the best book that I have seen for helping kids feel their best. For example, if a child cannot tolerate the food on his plate, she suggests practicing a gratitude meditation before eating where the caregiver and child explore the journey of the food to the plate (imagine the food growing as a plant and thanking sun, soil, water, as well as the farmer who cared for it, etc.) Kids become less afraid of unfamiliar foods and textures as they think about the effort involved in getting the food from a seed in the ground all the way to their plates - I've seen this work in my own home! I also love how at the end of each chapter, she asks the reader to check in with a centering thought for his or her own meditation practice. Having grounded children begins with having grounded caregivers. This is an excellent read with practical steps to follow (and also tips on how to advance to sensing what the child needs by having an open heart and mind rather than a strict plan to follow) - great for helping kids with special needs, as well as everyone else.

Awesome book, very informative and helpful and accessible. I have one daughter on the autism spectrum (high functioning) , a son who was adopted and has special needs and work at a Children's Hospital. I 've found something useful in the book for each of the people of I love!

This entertaining and often enlightening text defines what seasoned developers have long suspected: despite advances in software engineering, most software projects still fail to meet expectations--and about a third are cancelled altogether.

The authors of AntiPatterns draw on extensive industry experience, their own and others, to help define what's wrong with software development today. They outline reasons why problem patterns develop (such as sloth, avarice, and greed) and proceed to outline several dozen patterns that can give you headaches or worse.

Their deadliest hit list begins with the Blob, where one object does most of the work in a project, and Continuous Obsolescence, where technology changes so quickly that developers can't keep up. Some of the more entertaining antipatterns include the Poltergeist (where do-nothing classes add unnecessary overhead), the Boat Anchor (a white elephant piece of hardware or software bought at great cost) and the Golden Hammer (a single technology that is used for every conceivable programming problem). The authors then proceed to define antipatterns oriented toward management problems with software (including Death by Planning and Project Mismanagement, along with several miniature antipatterns, that help define why so many software projects are late and overbudget).

The authors use several big vendors' technologies as examples of today's antipatterns. Highly recommended for all software engineers (and Project Managers)

Highly recommended for all software engineers (and Project Managers). Some patterns won't apply, so don't feel like you'll have to read it straight through, but there are a lot of good patterns and solutions in here. I also like that they specifically call out when an Anti-Pattern might be the best solution for a particular problem. It is a little dated so some of their solutions have been replaced by better solutions in modern languages, but you can always take their examples and just port them to the language of your choice.

Common Sense sold as wisdom

This book was quite a disappointment, especially since I heard so much about it. As Shakespeare said "There is nothing new under the sun" and this book proves it. It's really just putting fancy or cute titles (corncob!) on quite obvious, well-known software development problems. I don't think I saw a new or original thought in it except for the title. Having said all that, it might be a useful introduction to classic, well-known s/w problems for someone new in the field.

A poor imitation trying to coattail on "Design Patterns"

This book tries to follow on the success of the wonderful book Design Patterns (Gamma, et. al.) but fails miserably. It's been said in other reviews that this is "common sense packaged as wisdom", and this is not far from the mark.
While some of the anti-patterns are mildly useful -- particularly the ones specifically related to software development itself -- the ones related to project management are so obvious and general that all but the novice will roll his or her eyes back with disbelief that these could be included in a software engineering book.
For instance, the "Corncob Pattern" is a difficult person who causes problems through destructive behaviors and how to work around him or her. It's true that we all run into people like this, but this is supposed to be a book at least _somewhat_ related to software.
They have three patterns that essentially deal with overplanning ("Analysis Paralysis", "Death by Planning", and "Design by Committee"), and while I suppose these are possible, too little planning is much more likely to cause project debacle than too much. In fairness, they do have a not-enough-planning pattern, "Architecture by Implication", though this deals with architecture and not requirements.
Believe it or not, "Irrational Managment" is a "pattern" in an engineering book that discusses what to do if your boss is the problem. This seems to be a topic best left to Dr. Laura, in "Ten Stupid Things Managers Do To Mess Up Your Project".
I was unfortunate enough to read "Anti-Patterns" before "Design Patterns", and the poor quality of the former nearly kept me from reading the latter. These books are simply not in the same league, and some might say not even in the same industry.
Avoid this book unless you have very little real-world experience in the software business.

Misled on the Yellow Brick Road

I found that Morena has misled her readers into thinking that this is a book about OZ; especially since she is a relative of the creator. But it really talks about her interest in play/sandbox therapy. I am not interested in that so I felt disappointed with the book.

Brilliantly insightful interpretation of the classic Oz tale

This book came to me at a crossroads in my own life, at a time when I was experiencing my own personal journey to find the metaphorical `home', which paralleled Dorothy's journey in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. I was so moved by Gita Morena's brilliantly insightful interpretation of the Oz story that I contacted her, and traveled across the country twice to attend meditation retreats that she led. The wisdom she brings to the interpretation of the Oz story is profound, inspirational and life-enhancing.

As great-granddaughter of Oz author L. Frank Baum, Dr. Morena brings a unique perspective to the interpretation of the Oz story in her masterfully written book. She begins by sharing her family history and setting the stage by showing how Baum's tale addressed numerous social, cultural and political issues in late 19th century America, when it was written. Dr. Morena is also a PhD Jungian psychologist who embraces Eastern philosophy, and it is this perspective that enables her to bring clarity to the true meaning of Dorothy's journey.

At some point in most every life, the proverbial `cyclone' hits out of the blue in the form of a major and unexpected upheaval. For those who allow their path to unfold, this `cyclone' represents the beginning of a sacred journey towards our true `home', which, as Dorothy learned, is the undiscovered or untapped resources we all possess, and the very "essence of who we are". Each character in Oz actually symbolizes an aspect of ourselves that must be acknowledged, developed and integrated into the whole. The Scarecrow represents wisdom, the Tin Woodman represents compassion, the Cowardly Lion represents courage, and Toto represents the intuitive or instinctual energy we each possess. Even the Wicked Witch represents the "shadow" or dark and repressed side of ourselves that we may not want to face, but must be addressed in order to find `home'. Dorothy's journey has several distinct phases and contains many challenges, paralleling our human journey along our own yellow brick road in life. We must also learn as Dorothy did that there really are no magical "Wizards" who can rescue us and send us home - we must do this for ourselves. In her book, Dr. Morena also shares her own very personal journey, which parallels Dorothy's. It is through facing the challenges in life's journey that we develop our own wisdom, compassion, courage and intuition, and find our own way `home'. As Dorothy realizes at the end of the story, she already has everything she needs inside of her.

The Oz characters and the journey along the yellow brick road touch a deep chord in many readers, and have become powerful metaphorical symbols in our culture. Dr. Morena illustrates this point using examples from the "sandplay" portion of her psychotherapy practice. Clients are guided to create scenes in a type of sandbox, choosing several of thousands of small figures available. As with art, music or poetry, these scenes help express important aspects of the inner self and the personal journey that a person may not be able to express in words. Time after time Dr. Morena's clients are drawn to use Oz characters or to create a yellow brick road in the sand, thus demonstrating how these characters do represent aspects of ourselves that must be acknowledged, developed, and/or integrated into the self. It is quite fascinating.

I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in a deeper look at this classic tale, and how its symbolic imagery can illuminate aspects of every human journey.

Invaluable text

Through my clinical neurophysiology fellowship and beyond, Dr. Campbell's text book has remained a frequently utilized asset to my study. The text is filled with a voluminous amount of high-yield concepts in electrodiagnostic medicine, which are explained in an easy-to-read format. In particular, his illustrations are very effective in portraying anatomy and basic-science concepts relevant to electrodiagnostic medicine.

The text served me well as an intense review summary (as I used it repeatedly preparing for both the ABEM and ABPN fellowship boards), and also has been a valuable reference in my clinical practice. Unlike other books on my office shelf, I return to Dr. Campbell's book regularly.

I would highly recommend Essentials of Electrodiagnostic Medicine for any clinical neurophysiology fellow, or any physician who performs electrodiagnostic studies as part of his/her clinical practice.

Excellent Resource

I am an aspiring interior designer. I found this to be an excellent reference guide and tool for learning about the role of color in interior design and how to successfully build a coherent palette. Easy to read. Contains excellent examples.
